Top end ones, of course, who cars about the inner city beater models:) Been trying to find out how much the new GM and Ford offerings were going to be. Found this courtesy of the State of NC. Shows that the twin turbo V6 model of the Taurus and the 6.0 liter from GM (the Chevrolet Caprive PPV) (now simply called the Police Interceptor Sedan) will cost about 5K more than the Dodge Charger 5.7 police car.

The Dodge come in at about 21K or so, with both the GM and the Ford costing about 25-26K.

Be interesting to see how the next few years of police car buys turns out. Ford used to have it locked up pretty tight, lots of departments had a large investment in Ford Crown Victoria infrastructure. But now thats not going to be a player, how will departments choose?

I'm willing to bet, whichever make they choose; it's gonna be the top-end model.
A friend of mine with CCSO told me about a little over a year ago that they MIGHT be getting Dodge Chargers; I'm betting the R/T model. Haven't heard anything since then. I think he's still in a Crown Vic for the time being.

Hmmm, so, are they getting the turbo versions? Or the run of the mill V6s, I wonder? A 280hp 3.5 liter that costs about 21K, a 3.7 liter 300hp one that costs about 25K, or the 26K twin turbo model.

Considering that the competition costs the same as the 280 one with the power of the 26K one, and only comes in FWD (3.5l) or AWD(3.7 and twin turbo model), I wonder which way they will go.

Unless of course, they have found a stash of the last of the CVPIs.

Personally not a big Dodge fan, make great concept cars but IMHO suck in the reliability i look for in a vehicle, know the chargers are fast, but i would take a Ford Crown Vic PI, over a Charger any day for the reliability.

I have heard officers on both side of the fence, some swear by thier Chargers, some think they are not so reliable. Mine of course doesnt get driven like a police car, but has been great over it's 130K like so far.

And the CVPI is gone, they are not making them any more.

I've heard the same thing about the Chargers, that they are still lacking in the reliability department, mainly transmissions.

Some I've heard from in Law Enforcement have complained that the Chargers have too much HP for the car and in some cases is actually dangerous.

Hmm, transmission should be the one bulletproof piece, darn thing is a 10 year old Mercedes design, that's one piece that doesn't seem to ever break. Complaints I heard were more about suspension stuff. Wonder if its complaints about the normal operation of an electronically controlled transmission.

They used to have a full defeat mode for the ESP (stability control) system, but after the first two years, that got taken away due to advice from the officer advisory board.
