Man I hope that's true. I have little idea whether it actually is other than to say that it wouldn't surprise me if it were. They are saying he has enough recorded material to put one album out per year, for the next 100 years.
I'm kind of surprised at the amount the news cycle is attaching to his death. In my lifetime, I can recall maybe three musician's deaths that were substantial. Artists whose contributions to the music industry were seriously monumental that the kind of work they did may likely never be repeated, and stood head and shoulders above their peers.
They would be, in no particular order - Elvis, Lennon and Michael Jackson. Each of them have a cultural legacy that will live long past me.
I never felt that way about Prince. I never heard of him before Purple Rain. There have been many music icons over the last 30 years whose music I barely listened to, largely due to a pattern I realized later - if I didn't like the song in a few seconds, I changed the station. Pretty much means most rap artists and soft ballad singers since the 80's went unheard (by me). I could probably name 3 Mariah Carey songs, and they'd all be 20 years old or more. I know of two Bryan Adams songs - I don't care for either of them, and it amazes me that any other song was a hit.
I think I can name maybe four Prince songs, and I don't care for any of them. I don't hate them, it's just if they came on, I wouldn't leave it on to intentionally listen to it.

That's not as great as it sounds. I record a LOT of stuff I loved at the time and go back a month or two later and instantly see it as not quite what it felt like at the time. This is only to say that Prince, any artist, doesn't have 100's of GREAT songs that were never released. There may be some gems in there but a LOT of it is going to be crap. :shrug:They are saying he has enough recorded material to put one album out per year, for the next 100 years.
Some folks would say the same about the ones that meant something to you. It's just a personal preference. I remember Elvis dying because my mom burst into tears. I was young and even then was like "Why are you crying over some fat, red faced lounge act?" Lennon meant little to me. He was just a recluse has been. MJ, didn't phase me either because I'd been expecting to hear he'd dropped dewad YEARS before it happened.I'm kind of surprised at the amount the news cycle is attaching to his death. Take as long as you need. For those that were worried about me, I'm now officially out of mourning and I think I'm going to be okay.

I was running out of black clothes, so...Take as long as you need.![]()
I would put Bowie in there as well. That's two music icons/legends this year. Both were huge as far as the development of music videos and the MTV Generation. I'm a huge fan of both. Like you, I can respect that Elvis & MJ are as well, just not my cup of tea. Another thing that I like about Prince is that he stood up and was vocal and rebelled against the music industry as well as digital online available music...Some folks would say the same about the ones that meant something to you. The ones that mattered to me was, first and foremost, Stevie Ray Vaughn. That was crushing. Jeff Hannamen of Slayer going was bad too because I was a fan and he's my age. Bon Scott was nearly as bad as SRV.
So, not to disparage any of the others but it is just personal. Lennon, MJ, Elvis, they deserve icon status and deep mourning. Just not from me. Same for Prince. He's in that class. Just not for me.

Yup. Bowie is yet another example of someone I readily confer icon status to that passes and I don't feel the loss.I would put Bowie in there as well. That's two music icons/legends this year. We're in a 'sweet spot o' death' as far as a LOT of icons of 60's, 70's pop era that are in that 70 plus age range. Willie, Richards, gosh, a ton. There are also lesser lights, not quite super stars, dropping. Billy Paul of Me and Mrs. Jones fame died yesterday.I would put Bowie in there as well. That's two music icons/legends this year. Not purple??? WTF?I was running out of black clothes, so...
Good point. But I don't have a lot of purple clothes. Not purple??? WTF?
That's not bad. Purple suit, gold swing, DJ'ing and morning a star all wrapped into one post.Good point. But I don't have a lot of purple clothes.
I do have a purple suit left from my deejaying days. I suppose I could have worn it when I played golf this weekend but it probably would have been a little tight and interfered with my swing.
Who the hell am I kidding... the way I've been playing lately, what difference could it possibly make?
Damn.... and I thought I was a music snob! GeezYup. Bowie is yet another example of someone I readily confer icon status to that passes and I don't feel the loss.![]()
Bowie was definitely in my "Top 5". As was Freddie Mercury. Prince was probably "Top 10" territory. That's certainly not to take anything way from Prince, but the musical world is vast.I would put Bowie in there as well. That's two music icons/legends this year. I was never a huge Queen fan. They are nowhere near my top 10 or even 20. Bowie & Prince are in my 20 somewhere.Bowie was definitely in my "Top 5". As was Freddie Mercury. Prince was probably "Top 10" territory. That's certainly not to take anything way from Prince, but the musical world is vast.
It's not snob, though I am, to state how one feels. No one should feel a sense of loss over any of those people based on some societal standard of 'artist a's passing should make you feel bad because they were great' . Freddy's passing was like mj, I knew he was great but it was little surprise nor did their music mean all that much to me and Freddy is, by far, the best of the bunch talent and skill wise. By far.Damn.... and I thought I was a music snob! Geez
That makes no sense. If bowie and prince are top 20 how is Freddy not? Snob.I was never a huge Queen fan. They are nowhere near my top 10 or even 20. Bowie & Prince are in my 20 somewhere.
I get purple suit, gol[f] swing, and DJ'ing. But what is the reference to "morning a star?"That's not bad. Purple suit, gold swing, DJ'ing and morning a star all wrapped into one post.
