I like some of Bruce Springsteen's music, he has a great soulful sound. But the stuff I like tends to be his less iconic stuff. The Tunnel of Love album is probably a top 30 album for me in terms of albums that I like to listen all the way through.
But he doesn't compare for me to Prince, particularly in the way that others have mentioned - when it comes the the artistic (whatever the hell that means, it's kinda hard to define) quality of his music. For me Prince is at the top of that list for my lifetime. The body of music that he created is, to me, unmatched by any other solo artist from the last 4 decades - it's so voluminous, so varied, and so consistently good. He's been pop and funk and rock and jazz to varying degrees through this career, and often at the same time. I don't however think he's been as influential in the evolution of pop music as some others have been, so I wouldn't rank him first there. (He's been influential of course, but some others have probably been more so.)
I listened to the last album that he released, HitNRun Phase Two, for the first time last week. It's pretty good and it extended my Best of playlist by a couple more songs. It's no where near Parade or Dirty Mind or Sign 'O' The Times good, but not much is.
