Professor of Psychology Aileen Bailey recently presented on “Adding Advanced Data Science Skills in Psychology Laboratory Courses” at the Annual Conference on Teaching Psychology sponsored by the Society for the Teaching of Psychology (Division 2 of the American Psychological Association). The presentation focused on mechanisms to scaffold and embed data science instruction and skills in psychology courses which connects to a joint project with Associate Professor of Psychology James Mantell. Bailey and Mantell were awarded an Improving Undergraduate STEM Education (IUSE) grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to support their work.
Bailey also co-led a workshop on “Getting Started with Alternative Grading” at the same conference. Bailey assisted with other psychology instructors on brainstorming methods to transform assignments or courses to an alternative grading systems known as specifications grading. Specifications grading moves away from the traditional use of ‘points’ to emphasize revision and fundamental understanding of core content and skills.
