St. Mary’s College of Maryland Professor of Mathematics David Kung is a 2021 recipient of the Deborah and Franklin Tepper Haimo Awards from the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). The Deborah and Franklin Tepper Haimo Awards honor college or university professors who have been widely recognized as extraordinarily successful and whose teaching effectiveness has been shown to have had influence beyond their own institutions.
According to MAA, Kung is recognized for outstanding teaching and mentorship, as well as his leadership in making mathematics more inclusive at St. Mary’s College. His passion for teaching mathematics is contagious, inspiring everyone he interacts with.
“I am incredibly honored to receive the Haimo Award,” said Kung. “I appreciate the work done by the committee to diversify the list of recipients. I dedicate this to the many faculty—especially those of color—whose work has gone unacknowledged over many decades. We must do better, myself included.”
Additional recipients along with Kung, include, David Austin from Grand Valley State University, and Elaine Kasimatis from California State University, Sacramento.
“Building effective practice for teaching & learning is a core value of the MAA,” said Michael Pearson, executive director of MAA. “These individuals demonstrate that our work with students can also contribute to our vision of a society that values the power and beauty of mathematics and fully realizes its potential to promote human flourishing.”
The Mathematical Association of America is the world’s largest community of mathematicians, students, and enthusiasts.
