Professor of Psychology Libby Nutt Williams recently published an article in the journal Psychotherapy with alumna Emily Morgan ’17. The article, “A Qualitative Study of Psychotherapists’ In-Session Tears,” which is based on Morgan’s SMP examines the impact of therapists’ crying during counseling sessions from the point of view of the therapist. As an exploratory study on the topic, the therapists interviewed had overall positive perceptions of the consequences of their own tears but also acknowledged not feeling fully prepared to manage decisions about whether to show their tears in counseling. Morgan and Williams are also scheduled to present their work at the annual convention of the American Psychological Association in August.
