Project Graduation, a drug- and alcohol-free party for Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) 2019 high school graduates, will be held in the PE Building of the College of Southern Maryland (CSM) in La Plata. The event will be from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. the night of a high school’s graduation with graduates and one guest admitted free.
North Point High School’s Project Graduation is May 30. On May 31, St. Charles, La Plata and Thomas Stone high schools will celebrate. Westlake, Henry E. Lackey and Maurice J. McDonough high schools will gather June 1 for the party.
Graduates can feast on free food like pizza, hot dogs, wings and ice cream, and take part in activities such as playing volleyball in a bounce house, taking a spin on a LED dance floor and playing laser light tag. Attendees can bring a towel and swimsuit to take a dip in the pool. Raffles will be held to win prizes including Visa gift cards, mini refrigerators and microwaves, tablets and other electronics.
Drivers and passengers in each car entering the CSM campus must present Project Graduation tickets and have their vehicle searched by sheriff’s officers to ensure no alcohol, tobacco, drugs or weapons are present. At the door, guests will have their bags searched for substances or weapons.
In the 33 years since Project Graduation has been in operation there has not been a drug- or alcohol-related fatality involving a graduate on their graduation night.
Project Graduation was started by a community organization called The Chemical People in 1986 to provide a substance-free event for high school graduates and their guests. CCPS took over planning the event in 2017 and is a partnership made up of CCPS, the Charles County Sheriff’s Office, CSM, Charles County Department of Health, Charles County Commissioners, Charles County States Attorney’s Office, the Greater Waldorf Jaycees and several other businesses and community organizations in Southern Maryland.
