Proposed bill could raise some speeding fines

to more than $500 along Maryland Route 210

“We have a static system right now — $40, no matter if you’re going 67 miles an hour, or you get caught going 167 miles an hour,” said Rev. Robert Screen, a member of the 210 Traffic Safety Committee.

The proposed bill would fine speeding drivers based on how much they exceeded the posted limit:

  • 12-21 miles per hour over the limit would warrant a $40 fine
  • 22-31 miles per hour over the limit would warrant a $90 fine
  • 32-41 miles per hour over the limit would warrant a $160 fine
  • 42-51 miles per hour over the limit would warrant a $290 fine
  • 52 miles per hour or more over the limit would warrant a $530 fine
Fines for repeat speeding offenses in a two-year period would range from $50 for a second violation, up to $350 for a sixth.

The county has seen 91 fatalities on MD-210 in the last 16 years, according to Screen, who added that “we only have a 14-mile span of road.”

Screen said there is a dire need for more safety measures on the highway: “We have a crisis situation.”

More scare mongering ... last I heard 80k cars a day go up and down Rt 210 .... 91 deaths in 16 yrs is hardly an epidemic especially against the volume of traffic

Where has this $40 fine been that the Good Reverend speaks of?

My last Maryland ticket was more than twice that. :lmao:

I recall on the back on my first two MD paper drivers licenses the words, 25mph over the speed limit was an instant revocation of your DL.

See. Here's the deal on that $40 fine. Only applies to automated enforcement done by speed cameras. Keep in mind speeding cameras allowed by a law that was pretty much ghost written by the automated enforcement industry after they spent 600k in lobbying Annapolis.

$40 fine and the original restriction to school zones had one purpose and one purpose only. That was to make the law more palatable to the citizens. Remember parasites that cause you pain or discomfort get scraped off pretty quick.

210 got a special dispensation to put cameras on that highway because of the high fatality rate. Most places with automated enforcement do not get away with a sliding scale like this. Because with increased fines comes increased scrutiny and legally they don't hold up that well. Well let's put it this way. They don't stand up to legal challenges in court unless you change the system and make it more rigorous which costs enough money that it doesn't make a profit.

DC has this sort of sliding scale, but the only reason it's lasted this long is that plus 90% of the people who get those tickets are not voters in DC.

Remember kids automated enforcement is always about making money every single time.

almost 25 years ago I got a $900 speeding ticket in California. Was the biggest BS speed trap ever. Long perfectly straight road with a slow incline with a 70mph speed limit, crest the hill and it's immediately 55mph and like a quarter mile further it's 35mph (because of invisible construction). So you are half asleep pushing the gas to get over the hill, then as soon as you are over the top you are speeding and before you can slow down you are in a double fine construction zone.

Thats the same design they use on I295. Perpetual construction with no signs of it anywhere other than cones and barrels that have been there since 2014.

$100 - $200 - $400...
