After millions across the country lost their jobs and livelihoods during the coronavirus pandemic, New York may consider enacting a $3 surcharge on delivery items at a time when leaving the house is considered dangerous.

The bill, proposed by Democrat Assemblyman Robert Carroll, would charge customers for items they ordered online, except for medicine and food. The surcharge would purportedly be used to help New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority address its budget issues, NBC New York reported.

Proposed $3 Amazon fee for MTA is tax on working class, AOC says

The tweet quickly went viral, drawing the ire of the millennial socialist’s 10.8 million followers — even though the bill from Assemblyman Robert Carroll (D-Brooklyn) exempts the essential items she cited as unfair to tax.

“The surcharge exempts food/medicine & other essential items,” Carroll tweeted in response.

“I support taxing the rich but I also support taxing things like gasoline [because] they have societal costs. We can & should tax both. The surcharge will make our air cleaner, streets safer & help thousands of small biz.”

Fueled by Ocasio-Cortez’s righteous indignation, dozens of online socialists piled on in response to Carroll’s tweets.

“This is an a**backwrd “trickle up” theory. Punish the people who need to shop online to try to hurt the GIANT WEALTHY corp at the top,” user @meltrat458 replied.

I have read this a few times and the thing that stands out is the headline says NYC but the text only refers to NYers. It has been a long standing thorn in residents of "The Other NY" well north of the city that their tax dollars subsidize NYC residents commute to work, trips to sports and concert venues,, shopping, and for every other reason else they ride the MTA. I wonder what the boundaries of this idiotic proposal are. I am sure a person commuting from Saratoga to Albany for work daily would love a daily subsidy. And also recently cuomo has stated large tax increases are inevitable even with federal help. Of course they are it is the mantra of the left.
