New proposed textbooks for use in the Teacher Academy of Maryland (TAM), Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education (CASE) and Business Management and Finance (BFM) career and technology education (CTE) programs are on display for review at the Jesse L. Starkey Administration Building and Charles County high schools.
If approved by the Board of Education, the textbooks will be incorporated into program curriculum for the 2019-20 and 2020-21 school years. All textbooks are on display for a 30-day review period.
One textbook is proposed for a new course included in the business CTE pathway, Advanced Business Management. The course is new and required by the Maryland State Department of Education’s (MSDE) program of study for the business pathway. The proposed textbook “MGMT 11” is authored by Chuck Williams and published by Cengage. Students will review copies of a traditional textbook in class, but will mainly access an online version of the textbook provided by the publisher. The textbook includes college-level material and is on display at the Starkey Building and Thomas Stone High School.
Two new textbooks are proposed for the TAM program for use in the Human Growth and Development, and Teaching as a Profession courses. The new texts include “Infants, Children, and Adolescents” authored by Laura E. Berk and Adena B. Meyers, published by Pearson, and “Teachers, Schools, and Society: A Brief Introduction to Education” authored by David M. Sadker and Karen Zittleman, and published by McGraw Hill. The textbooks will be phased into the program during both the 2019-20 and 2020-21 school years.
The textbooks were selected by Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) staff in consultation with agreements at the state level with 11 colleges and universities in Maryland. Through the agreement, the participating colleges and universities offer students credit and/or scholarship funds based on the completion of four TAM courses that include rigorous content and up-to-date material that meet college-level program demands. Both texts include college-level material and additional topics not covered in current TAM program materials. Both TAM program proposed texts are on display at the Starkey Building and Maurice J. McDonough High School.
Ten textbooks for the CASE program are proposed for Board approval. Six of the books are proposed for introduction in the coming school year, 2019-20, with an additional four textbooks to be added for the 2020-21 school year. The proposed texts include the following:
The textbooks will support the new CASE program that features a natural resources and agriculture pathway for students. All of the proposed CASE program books are on display at the Starkey Building and McDonough.
The Board of Education is reviewing the books and will take action on the proposal at its June 11 meeting.
