On Tuesday, Sept. 11, the Charles County Commissioners and the Charles County Department of Health proclaimed September 2012 as Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed form of non-skin cancer and the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among men.
The American Cancer Society reports that there will be an estimated 241,740 new cases of prostate cancer nationally in the year 2012, and approximately 28,170 men will die from prostate cancer. Approximately 25 percent of prostate cancer occurs in men under the age of 65.
The Charles County Department of Health encourages men to speak with their doctors or health care providers so they can learn more about their personal risks for prostate cancer, options for early screening, and the pros and cons of prostate cancer detection and treatment.
In an effort to raise prostate cancer awareness, Charles County Government has "painted the county blue" with signage and blue lights throughout the County Government Building in La Plata.
