Protect And Help Immigrants, Pope Tells Governments

"VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Governments must do more to help young immigrants and refugees assimilate in host countries and protect them from sexual exploitation and human trafficking, Pope Benedict said on Wednesday.

For their part, immigrants must obey laws and never resort to violence, Benedict said in a message for the Roman Catholic Church's World Day of Migrants and Refugees, which will fall on January 13.

The Pope issued his message as rich countries around the world, from the United States to Europe, are engaged in heated debates about immigration and its effect on everything ranging from national culture, to education, to crime."

Well, that would be the kicker, wouldn't it?

Surprised you didn't use that as your headline - "Immigrants Must Obey Laws and Never Resort to Violence" says Pope.

He said immigrants and refugees. That means we can still prosecute illegals and criminals.

This would work great if the immigrants and refugees were trying to assimilate into the culture of the host country. The Mexican flag being flown, displayed, and placed over the American flag; the non-English speaking arrogance (that non-English language should be fully accepted); etc., imply that the immigrants and refugees - legal and illegal - are trying to assimilate the American culture into their home culture.

More proud of where you were than where you are? Go back!

:coffee: I am happy to hear the Pope is taking the high moral ground.

The Pope's message marks one big difference between being a "Christian" in action instead of a "Christian" of hypocrisy.

Cheers to the Roman Catholic Church, amen.

More evidence that evangelicals and the GOP will continue to part ways.
I'm not following you; conservatives like immigrants that try to assimilate into the culture they've moved into, and that follow laws - which is what the Pope was saying.

How does two groups who agree show evidence that they'll part ways?

A Christian follows the Word of God.
God makes it clear in both the Person of the Father and the Son thru scripture, that the sojourner is to be treated as your own. Not cast out. Not denied food and shelter.
So, it is another aspect of conservative policy where a beleiver must consider WWJD vice WWCheneyD.
The Pope in his wisdom knows that being poor and an immigrant trumps illegality.
Broadly, true Christians have always desired social justice, with prohibition and the civil rights movements as examples. Tho Bush is a beleiver, he has compromised his beliefs many times, but remains a child of God. Re immigration, he saw the best chance in a lifetime to justly and practically solve the migrant issue for the most benefit. His party and fringe elements and powers beyond his control pulled the rug from under him, because unlike the war and wealthy tax breaks, it wasn't in their interest.
Nothing new. And the Dems do it from time to time. This ain't a partison viewpoint, just my interpretation of facts.

Hypocriy eh?

So when is the last time the country of Vatican City accepted immigrants that crossed their borders uninvited as citizens?

Acquisition and loss of citizenship, authorization to reside in the State of Vatican City and formalities to enter, are set out in the Law N. III of 7 June 1929, on citizenship and residence, and in the Regulation N. XXXVI of 27 September 1932, for entrance to Vatican City.

The Vatican has immigration laws too and until they take in hordes of immigrants with open arms, they should not tell others what is "moral" on the issue.

Practice what you preach Pope! Your palace has plenty of unused rooms they can stay in.

But when they break the law getting here they are not following the laws. Do conservatives like criminals joining our society?

My great gramparents were immigrants. I work with several immigrants. I've dated immigrants. I'm glad that every one of them has joined our society.

The people you're referring to, however, are called "illegal aliens".

This little distinction oftentimes goes ignored, or is deemed irrelevant by the leftists and sundry thick-witted, mouth breathing troglodytes among us.

Yes, it sometimes goes ignored and many that are pro-illegal immigration try to mix the terms as if they are the same.....the Vatcian just did this. The context of the article mentioned the "immigration" debate in the US. The "immigration" debate in the US is about the illegal immigration here, so the Vatican must have been including illegal immigrants in their statement calling for the United States to better accept them.

By the way, I am a leftist and my mother was an immigrant as well. As a matter of fact, probably 99% of my father's family came from immigrants too if one wants to count the 1860s immigrants in the family.

Being against illegal immigration is also a liberal cause too. Illegal immigration hurts the poor and middle class American workers....including and especially the naturalized former immigrant citizens.
It is just the demogogue politicians in both parties which are pro illegal immigration.

S'alright - Being in favor of illegal immigration seems to be a popular right-wing stance as well.

At least among the "leadership"... such as it is.
Like I said, the demagogues, except they are not pandering to the masses, they are pandering to the biggest fundraisers and a particular sect which they hope is uniform in their reaction to the demagoguery.

Here's where I've got to stop you - I don't think this is true. One aspect of being a deserving person of the faith and help from a Christian is an honest attempt at being an honest person. An illegal immigrant is already demonstrated a dishonest person for knowingly violating the law. A good Samaritan will help people who need and deserve it, but the best way to help such a dishonest person it to send them back where they belong.

Note the quoted idea that there are expectations on the immigrant - to assimilate, OBEY LAWS, no violence, etc.
Re immigration, he saw the best chance in a lifetime to justly and practically solve the migrant issue for the most benefit. His party and fringe elements and powers beyond his control pulled the rug from under him, because unlike the war and wealthy tax breaks, it wasn't in their interest.
But, I thought the argument for illegals getting my sympathy is that they do the work Americans won't do, for big corporations who take advantage of them and make big bucks while paying them too little. So, now those same big buck makers don't want gobs of illegals here to do those jobs cheaply?

No, it was security of our borders that was the main cry against illegal aliens (not to mention the reprehensible acitons of a significant number, and the costs to our society for that)
Nothing new. And the Dems do it from time to time. This ain't a partison viewpoint, just my interpretation of facts.
Not partisan is why you brought it up as a GOP/evangelical divide? Puh-lease.
