Proverbs 1:8 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.
9 They are a garland to grace your head
and a chain to adorn your neck.
10 My son, if sinful men entice you,
do not give in to them.
11 If they say, “Come along with us;
let’s lie in wait for innocent blood,
let’s ambush some harmless soul;
12 let’s swallow them alive, like the grave,
and whole, like those who go down to the pit;
13 we will get all sorts of valuable things
and fill our houses with plunder;
14 cast lots with us;
we will all share the loot”—
15 my son, do not go along with them,
do not set foot on their paths;
16 for their feet rush into evil,
they are swift to shed blood.
17 How useless to spread a net
where every bird can see it!
18 These men lie in wait for their own blood;
they ambush only themselves!
19 Such are the paths of all who go after ill-gotten gain;
it takes away the life of those who get it.
and do not forsake your mother’s teaching.

In Solomon’s time, both parents educated their children. It is good when children can learn from both parents.
To obtain wisdom, we must study. And we need discipline. We cannot become wise quickly. But wisdom will improve our lives.
Some people imagine that they know a quicker way to improve their lives. Solomon warns about such people in verses 10-19. They offer friendship (verse 14). But their friendship cannot last because their plan is evil. They offer rich rewards (verse 13). But really they will suffer a terrible fate (verse 19). Wisdom is much better than any evil plan.

I got this from Bible.org.
Sweet and innocent as children may often be, there is natural inclination toward foolishness and rebellion in the heart of every child. Consequently the parents’ words are not what a child himself is inclined to think. Parents of teenagers will probably agree with me that parental teaching and standards of conduct are thought to be a “pain in the neck,” not an ornamental and beautifying chain about the neck.
The assumption underlying the appeal of the father in this chapter is that wisdom is largely conveyed to a child through his parents. But at this point in the life of a young man, that assumption is often challenged. Have you ever had the distinct impression from your teenage child that it is you who are naive, while the child is sophisticated and worldly-wise? Parents are never so backward or ill-informed as during the teen years of their children. Our children roll their eyes and merely tolerate the ideas and ideals as an anachronism from the days following the Flood. The father urges his son not to allow this youthful and erroneous mentality to control his thinking.

I know that raising a son right is the most important thing you can do for him. My first marriage was horrible... my son would have learned horrible things from my first husband. When I told my first husband that I was pregnant with my third child [my son], he told me I would have to get an abortion because he just couldn't afford another baby. That was strike two... I won't go into strike one... but that was strike two... strike three was when he punched me in the belly leaving a bruise as big as a saucer trying to cause the abortion. ANYWAY... when I finally got away from my first husband.... I was afraid my son would be taken back by my first husband... so I got my dad to take my son. My mom and dad were to adopt my son. I knew my dad would protect him.
My son still doesn't get it. I guess you have to know about strike one to understand... but my son is a good man because he was raised by my dad.... and I don't regret it. My dad was a great role model for my son. So much so that my son's only rebellion growing up was speeding. He got several speeding tickets... and had to spend a weekend in jail to learn the consequences... but that's not so bad.... my son was wise to learn from my dad. [I guess the judge was wise too... cause my son doesn't speed anymore.]
