Next Saturday—“Surviving the Next Pandemic: Bird Flu and Other Emerging Infectious Diseases” by Michael Greger, M.D., director of public health and animal agriculture at The Humane Society of the United States.

The H5N1 avian influenza virus has killed millions of birds across the globe and roughly half of all humans known to be infected. Leading public health authorities predict that the virus may trigger a deadly human influenza pandemic worldwide.

The influenza virus has existed harmlessly in wild ducks for millennia. So what turned this non-threatening duck virus into a killer? On January 13 to trace the role of humans in the evolution of bird flu.
