Psalm 122: A song of ascents. Of David.
1 I rejoiced with those who said to me,
“Let us go to the house of the Lord.”
2 Our feet are standing
in your gates, Jerusalem.
3 Jerusalem is built like a city
that is closely compacted together.
4 That is where the tribes go up—
the tribes of the Lord—
to praise the name of the Lord
according to the statute given to Israel.
5 There stand the thrones for judgment,
the thrones of the house of David.
6 Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:
“May those who love you be secure.
7 May there be peace within your walls
and security within your citadels.”
8 For the sake of my family and friends,
I will say, “Peace be within you.”
9 For the sake of the house of the Lord our God,
I will seek your prosperity.

David didn't build the Temple.... David's "Temple" was a tent and David made sure the Arc of the Covenant made it back to Jerusalem. The brick and mortar Temple was built by Solomon with materials David gathered up for him. Then the Temple was destroyed when the people were murdered, castrated or raped by the people from Babylonia [Iraq]. The people were held in Babylonia [Iraq] for 70 years and then they got to go back and build a smaller version of the Temple in Jerusalem. This poem, however, this translation.... says "Of David" and since I'm not reading a chapter of the Handmaid's Tale, I have to come to the thought David must have written this or approved it.

David conquered the city of Jerusalem, taking it from the Jebusites who held it as a Canaanite stronghold. He built the city in his own day, and David rejoiced in declaring, Jerusalem is built.
David’s city of Jerusalem was not large, but it was not a disordered collection of tents and shacks. It was built, and built together in an orderly way (compact together). It was a real city.
One of the reasons David conquered Jerusalem and established it as the capital of both the political and religious life of Israel was because it did not previously belong to a specific tribe, being under Canaanite occupation. Because it belonged to no tribe it belonged to all the tribes, and the tribes of the LORD could come together as one at Jerusalem and the house of the LORD.
Being the seat of government for Israel, Jerusalem was where their main courts for judgment were established. Jerusalem was to be a city of justice, where good was honored and where evil was corrected.

God tells us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem in Psalm 122:6-9: “Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: ‘May those who love you be secure. May there be peace within your walls and security within your citadels.’ For the sake of my brothers and friends, I will say, ‘Peace be within you.’ For the sake of the house of the LORD our God, I will seek your prosperity.” From this passage, we see that praying for peace and good to come to God’s holy city benefits those who pray. God promised blessings on those who bless Israel and curses on those who curse her (Genesis 12:3), and since Jerusalem is depicted as the center of Jewish life, it follows that those who pray for her peace and security will be granted peace themselves.
The idea was.... only people from the twelve tribes of Israel [and a select few of gentiles they brought into the fold along the way] would live in Israel. Family would be helping family daily. There would be no quarrels.... when disagreements happened it was taken to the judge and straightened out. There would be no reason to fight..... everyone would serve God.... there would be no shiny objects to worship.... no poles or burning hot idols to murder babies on. The idea was to make Jerusalem kind of like Eden.... a good place where God and His stupid humans could be together.....

I just had a really far out thought.... so far out... I have to write it here..... Jerusalem is like God's stupid human park..... In Jerusalem God's stupid humans could be off the leash because they were all enclosed in the walls of Jerusalem.... playing freely with God overseeing their play. Prosperity.... in this case is not financial..... Prosperity in this case is safe and happy.
