Psalm 123 A song of ascents.
1 I lift up my eyes to you,
to you who sit enthroned in heaven.
2 As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a female slave look to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the Lord our God,
till he shows us his mercy.
to you who sit enthroned in heaven.
2 As the eyes of slaves look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a female slave look to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the Lord our God,
till he shows us his mercy.
3 Have mercy on us, Lord, have mercy on us,
for we have endured no end of contempt.
4 We have endured no end
of ridicule from the arrogant,
of contempt from the proud.
for we have endured no end of contempt.
4 We have endured no end
of ridicule from the arrogant,
of contempt from the proud.
As I said... I'm not great at poems so I'm going right to enduringword.com this morning. As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their masters: The idea is like a waiter or a butler standing behind their master seated at dinner. The servant looks to the hand of their masters for the slightest indication of need or want, to instantly meet the need. With that same intensity, devotion, and steadfastness the Psalmist looks to God.
Have mercy on us: The Psalmist wasn’t content to only wait for mercy; he begged for it. He demonstrated that waiting on the LORD is not a passive thing. He repeated the request for mercy, showing the intensity of his plea. The Master he looked to would look upon him and help.
There are a lot of people who are begging for mercy these days.... out in California...... where a stronger earthquake hit last night or early this morning. It's amazing what happens to a rock during an earthquake. Rocks turn to liquid apparently and then back to solid again. The news reports say people are "bracing for more shocks". I wonder.... how many atheists said "Oh Lord help me".Anyway.... back to the poem..... this is from the easy English site.
"Have mercy" is an important Christian prayer. You say a prayer when you speak to God. To ask God to "have mercy" means to ask him not to punish (hurt) you when you have done something wrong. Instead, you ask him to be kind and to forgive you. The notes on Psalm 130 explain the word "forgive".
Sometimes people think and say things that are not kind about you. We call that "contempt". "Proud people" think that they are more important than they are. When powerful people make poor people work for little or no money we call this "oppression". Also, when powerful people are cruel to weak people, we call that "oppression" too. In Psalm 123, the powerful people oppress the poor people.
God allows us to be treated with contempt and oppression.... it's not the worst thing in life....
Jesus was hated.... they hated Him so bad.... they hung Him on a cross.... buck naked.... a horrible sentence in those days.....
God allows bad people to do and say bad things..... while He waits for them to straighten out..... they may not know God today.... but God knows how it turns out.... God knows that some will come in the next minute... and some in the next year.... and some won't come at all..... so God's waiting and while He waits...
some are changed and forgiven for those bad things they said and did.
So... while God has me serving..... others are coming to Salvation.... coool.....
This is another of those marching songs.....
