Psalm 3:1 Lord, how many are my foes!
How many rise up against me!
2 Many are saying of me,
“God will not deliver him.”[b]
How many rise up against me!
2 Many are saying of me,
“God will not deliver him.”[b]
3 But you, Lord, are a shield around me,
my glory, the One who lifts my head high.
4 I call out to the Lord,
and he answers me from his holy mountain.
my glory, the One who lifts my head high.
4 I call out to the Lord,
and he answers me from his holy mountain.
5 I lie down and sleep;
I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.
6 I will not fear though tens of thousands
assail me on every side.
I wake again, because the Lord sustains me.
6 I will not fear though tens of thousands
assail me on every side.
7 Arise, Lord!
Deliver me, my God!
Strike all my enemies on the jaw;
break the teeth of the wicked.
Deliver me, my God!
Strike all my enemies on the jaw;
break the teeth of the wicked.
8 From the Lord comes deliverance.
May your blessing be on your people.
May your blessing be on your people.
a. Psalm 3:1 In Hebrew texts 3:1-8 is numbered 3:2-9.
b. Psalm 3:2 The Hebrew has Selah (a word of uncertain meaning) here and at the end of verses 4 and 8.
Well, this is from the easy English site.
David was king of Israel 1000 years before Jesus came to the earth. Absalom was a son of David. Absalom wanted to become king so he attacked David. David ran away to a safe place. Absalom said, "Now I am king of Israel".
But David asked God for help. David became king again. Absalom died. The story is in the Second Book of Samuel, chapters 15 - 19.
David wrote Psalm 3 after he ran away. He wrote it one morning. In it, David thanked the LORD for a safe night. That is why we call Psalm 3 a morning song. We must thank God every morning when he keeps us safe in the night.
I needed a refresher.... Remember pretty son Absalom? Absalom and Tamar were David's children with Maacah. She was actually a princess. Tamar was raped by her stepbrother and Absalom wanted justice. Amnon, the rapist, was David's second son. Amnon's mother was Ahinoam . There's not a lot about her in the Bible. I don't think David really loved Ahinoam.... there's no description of her. There's no love story. So... David was in a tough spot... his third son wants to have him kill his second son.... for the rape of his daughter.... and David does nothing. So Absalom got angry and he killed Amnon. Absalom also set up a media campaign and took Israel from his dad, David. David went into hiding. David was sure he was a washed up as Saul...... and that's when he wrote this Psalm.
2 Samuel 18:9 Now Absalom happened to meet David’s men. He was riding his mule, and as the mule went under the thick branches of a large oak, Absalom’s hair got caught in the tree. He was left hanging in midair, while the mule he was riding kept on going.
I think I've told this before.... but when I get in a place where I'm afraid.... I start to pray.... and I can feel [imagine] God walking beside me with one arm around my shoulders and the other God's toting a gun [as if God would need a gun!]. I know it's not normal.... but try it next time you're in a dangerous situation.... next time the wind might blow you off the Thomas Johnson Bridge... imagine God's great big hand covering your car, truck, or cycle so it won't blow off the road.... talk about "Jesus take the wheel".... this is God cover me! It only works, though, if I pray. He'll be happy to cover me... all I have to do is ask. So that's what David's doing here... he's asking God to help him.
