Psalm 84[a]For the director of music. According to gittith.(b) Of the Sons of Korah. A psalm.
1 How lovely is your dwelling place,
Lord Almighty!
2 My soul yearns, even faints,
for the courts of the Lord;
my heart and my flesh cry out
for the living God.
3 Even the sparrow has found a home,
and the swallow a nest for herself,
where she may have her young—
a place near your altar,
Lord Almighty, my King and my God.
4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house;
they are ever praising you.[c]

4 Blessed are those who dwell in your house;

5 Blessed are those whose strength is in you,
whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.
6 As they pass through the Valley of Baka,
they make it a place of springs;
the autumn rains also cover it with pools.[d]
7 They go from strength to strength,
till each appears before God in Zion.
whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.

7 They go from strength to strength,

8 Hear my prayer, Lord God Almighty;
listen to me, God of Jacob.
9 Look on our shield,[e] O God;
look with favor on your anointed one.
listen to me, God of Jacob.
9 Look on our shield,[e] O God;
look with favor on your anointed one.
10 Better is one day in your courts
than a thousand elsewhere;
I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God
than dwell in the tents of the wicked.
11 For the Lord God is a sun and shield;
the Lord bestows favor and honor;
no good thing does he withhold
from those whose walk is blameless.

12 Lord Almighty,
blessed is the one who trusts in you.
blessed is the one who trusts in you.

Blessed is the man whose strength is in You: The man who finds his strength in God is also the one whose heart is set on pilgrimage. He does not rely on self or the world for strength, but considers Himself a visitor, a traveler, a pilgrim in this world. His true strength and treasure is in the world to come.
This strength and heart of a pilgrim is displayed by the love for the house of God. There he meets with God among other fellow pilgrims and they gain strength in God together as they do.
The love and longing for the house of God is not meant as an escape from the world, but as a preparation for life in the world.
Strength is in You: “If he cannot be at Zion, he can be with God; if he cannot enjoy sweetness he can find strength.” (Kidner)
Before the church started having such strife..... I loved to be in church.... Everywhere you look there is stuff about Jesus..... Everywhere you look there are people smiling and singing..... learning and praying.... there are a few exceptions.... some come with a heavy heart and no idea how to relieve the pain.... but soon they're smiling too.....
Remember the smell of fresh school supplies or the smell of a brand new pack of crayons? Ever noticed that the smell of a pot luck is gone the next day you walk in the room at church? Ever notice that people hardly ever pass gas and cause a stink in the chapel?
There was stained glass in all the windows of the chapel at one church we attended in Lothian. I noticed.... the stained glass windows kept out storm clouds. I can look out my bedroom window and see storm clouds brewing.... but in that chapel.... when I look out the window.... the pattern on the window is there to shelter me from the storm outside.... or to keep me focused on the preaching.... on a beautiful day.

We do not know who wrote Psalm 84. Some Bible students think that it was the same person that wrote Psalms 42 and 43. We call that person "the psalmist". The psalmist is far from the Temple in Jerusalem. He wants to be one of the people that visit the Temple. We call these people "pilgrims". Even if he could be for one day in the temple courts, that would be better than a thousand days anywhere else!
Korah was the name of a group that made music for the temple. There are notes about Korah before Psalm 73 in this series of psalms.
Every morning I get up and start the day with a Bible study. I've been doing it for years.... a few were posted while I was on vacation.... a few were posted while I was in the hospital.... but I look forward to it.... spending a little time with God.... I look forward to it....
If you ask me... that's what this is about.... spending time thinking about God.... it makes the day go better....
