Psalm 96: 1 Sing to the Lord a new song;
sing to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Sing to the Lord, praise his name;
proclaim his salvation day after day.
3 Declare his glory among the nations,
his marvelous deeds among all peoples.
sing to the Lord, all the earth.

4 For great is the Lord and most worthy of praise;
he is to be feared above all gods.
5 For all the gods of the nations are idols,
but the Lord made the heavens.
6 Splendor and majesty are before him;
strength and glory are in his sanctuary.
he is to be feared above all gods.
5 For all the gods of the nations are idols,
but the Lord made the heavens.

strength and glory are in his sanctuary.
7 Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations,
ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
8 Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name;
bring an offering and come into his courts.
9 Worship the Lord in the splendor of his[a] holiness;
tremble before him, all the earth.
10 Say among the nations, “The Lord reigns.”
The world is firmly established, it cannot be moved;
he will judge the peoples with equity.

11 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad;
let the sea resound, and all that is in it.
12 Let the fields be jubilant, and everything in them;
let all the trees of the forest sing for joy.

he comes to judge the earth.
He will judge the world in righteousness

The last part of the psalm says that the LORD is king and that one day he will come and rule the earth. He made (or fixed, verse 10) the earth in its place. Everything must be full of joy (be very happy). This means not only people, but also things. It means the earth and the sky. The Hebrew word here for "the sky" is "the heavens". "Heaven" means two things in the Bible. It can mean the sky, or it can mean the place where God lives. Here it means the sky, with all its suns, moons and stars. The sea includes everything that lives in it. If you have heard the sea, you will know the kind of "roar" (or loud noise) that it makes. Fields and everything in them must be happy also; so must the forests, with all their trees. For 2 000 years Christians have remembered that Jesus was King on a Tree. The tree was the Cross of Calvary, where he died. At the end of the psalm, in verse 13, the psalmist becomes a prophet. This means that he says what the LORD God will do. He will come to the earth and he will be a great and fair judge. A judge decides who has done right and who has done wrong. The "right" people are those who love, work for and obey the LORD. The "wrong" people are those who do not do this. We must choose ourselves which group we are in.
I don't know if I've ever heard a sermon or a Bible study about this. I'm sure it would have been a study on how the cross that Jesus was hung on.... was once a tree.... and how horrible that tree would have felt about being the one tree chosen for the Messiah. I'm sure there would have been some verses about how the nails would have scarred the young tree just as the palms of the Messiah were scarred. Maybe some preachers would add that the grain was probably straight and upright..... to hold the load of the Messiah. I'm pretty sure the preachers would think it's safe to go down that route..... BUT.... when I read this.... I saw a tree singing! God has returned.... the creator..... and when God returns.... those fallen angels.... well they'll be put in their place and they won't be tormenting everything everywhere ever again..... think about it.... Just what caused all this pollution that is mucking up the leaves.... making it harder for the plants and trees to get precious sunlight and rain? Just what caused that floating island of trash that is killing the fish in the sea? When God comes back.... He'll turn that all around..... the trees will be able to breath again and the fish will be free to swim.
When God returns..... the trees, rocks, and plants will sing..... everything will be right again..... Look on the sunny side!
