pup potty training

My natural born killer is having a little potty trouble..

He is about 5 months or so old now and for a while had been able to go through the night (SO would let him out for the last time around midnight, I would take him out in the morning around 6:30 or so) but for the last few nights he has cried to go out in the middle of the night..and last night..I was up every two hours to let him out..what's going on? He lets me know he has to go out..but I am wondering why all of the sudden he can't wait longer than two hours? He seems to pee an awful lot (and we restrict his water in the evenings) and did at least 4 or 5 times last night...I will likely call the vet..but is this normal puppy behavior? or should I be looking for a cause?

If it just started, I would go have him checked out just to be sure. Is he actually peeing a lot each time, or is he just having to go a lot and not much coming out?

It could be normal behavior but it could also be a UTI. I'm not a fan of restricting water either. :ohwell:

he is peeing a "normal" amount each time, and it doesnt seem to be a problem during the day (he goes out every 4 hours) and when I am home in the evenings he goes out about twice in the 6 or 7 hours before bed..its seems to be overnight..

edit: he is not just peeing, either..every time I took him out last night he did both

He is probably just drinking a lot in the evenings, so he has to go during the night.

Our puppy was on a pretty good schedule of pooping in the mornings and afternoons, and now he's pooping like 4 or 5 times a day.

Abnormal urination 'schedule' can be an indicator of serious issues. Is he peeing in spurts, or when he goes does he seem to be emptying his bladder? If he is just sort of squirting a little, and doesn't sem to be emptying himself, or if he goes out, pees, and doesn't really drink much and needs to go again multiple times over a short period, you need to get him to a vet. It could possibly be anything from a UTI to oncoming kidney failure.

The melanine poisoning a few years back caused kidney failure in a LOT of dogs. It isn't something you want to risk if there is a possibilty.

I'd suggest temporarily witholding water... just enough to tell if he is having trouble peeing, or just drinking to much. If you take it away about 6PM, and monitor his urination overnight, it should be pretty obvious by morning if he is still needing to go frequently. He should be fine overnight without water as long as he is inside and not tearassing all over the place all night. :yay:

Edit- Didn't see your last post. So he seems to be emptying? AND he's pooping frequent too? Have you been giving him beer and jalapenos? :lmao: Is his poo loose?

Thats what is kinda strange..he seems to be doing everything "normal" just often...like he reverted back to when he was 8 weeks old and that potty schedule

Well, here's the thing...

A healthy dog normally poops twice a day. If he is pooping a 'normal' amount several times a day you are feeding him WAY to much.... :lmao:

Same goes for urination. I think the key here is to see whether he is emptying himself, which is what he should be doing. If he is not gobbling up more water he CAN'T go often if he is peeing his normal amount. If he is gobbling water, that in itself could be an indicator of kidney or other issues....
No way can he be peeing a 'normal' amount for a 'normal' dog and be doing it so frequently, without him noticably gobbling water... it has to come from someplace, or he'd shrivel up and turn to dust.

Perhaps he has learned that when he wants out, he gets out, and thus a form of attention... and he is using that at night, to get your attention. Perhaps there is an underlying medical issue...

I'd vet him JIC.
