Puppy in trouble!

I adopted my dog from the Friends for Life Animal Rescue last Sunday only to find out that she has heartworm and a heart murmur. Does anyone know state laws about animal rescue groups having to give prevention or treat such diseases? They received her in October and gave her Strongid to prevent worms, which only lasts one month, and had not given her anything since. (The same goes for Revolution for ticks and fleas). My vet told me that she is pretty confident that they also have to check them for heartworm and it be negative one week before dogs are adopted, which they obviously didn't do. I don't have the money for her treatment on my own so I need to know if I have a case against them so they will pay for it.

Sorry to hear about your pup. I adopted from Tri-County Animal Shelter. They test for heartworm before adoption. I don't know if it is a state law or not, but they may be a good place to ask.
Good luck.

I didn't mean to say I don't have the money. If it came down to it I would pay for the treatment myself (even if it would leave me close to broke). Thank you to those who actually gave helpful suggestions though--appyday and bresamil.

What now?!
I adopted my dog from Montross Animal Shelter. They told me the puppy had gotten his first set of shots but had no documentation. Needless to say, I took the puppy to vet the next day and found out he had worms. I guess my point is, there are no guarantees and my vet suggested that the pup get all shots all over again. It is expensive, but he's my baby!

Ivermec is one wormer that prevents heartworms...I think the dog probably had them in Oct when they got it as they are spread by mosquetos. I do think most organizations test and place heartworm free dogs.

Ivermectin- the dog kind (which is gentler) not the horse kind :D The horse kind can kill a pup. Since strongid was mentioned, (horse wormer which is safe for dogs and cats) I just wanted to mention Ivermectin such as Ivercare or Zimectrin would NOT be safe for the smaller furkids :D (I know YOU know this appyday, but just wanted to clear it up for those that might not know)

A fecal sample is taken to check for worms. It may have been they gave the dogs it shots but didn't worm it.

As for the other thing most rescue (that I have had contact with) treat the dogs with flea/tick and heartworm preventive. That is part of what the adoption fee covers.
