Puppy Pee

HELP!

We have a one year old Dachsund. We house trained her over about a month, not bad in or book, however, during that time she took to a rather expensive area rug on our hardwood floor to pee on. We took the rug up 10 months ago. We cleaned it extensively and just put it back down two weeks ago. Yep, the little shiat is peeing on the area rug again. We have tried the store bought anti-pee crap (pun intended) to no avail. Short of trying to sell you all a very expensive and slightly peed-on area rug, does anyone have suggestions on how to re-train to keep the little shiat from peeing on the rug? It is really pi$$ing me off.....but I want to figure a way to gently train her and keep the rug at the same time.

Do you yell at the dog when it pees on the rug or shove its face in it when you discover it? If so, that reinforces the problem. While its negative attention, its attention. First eliminate providing any attention to the dog after or during an accident. Additionally, NEVER clean up the accident in front of the dog. Dogs will learn by watching and if they see you are interested in that EXACT spot, then they are more likely to go back there and have an accident.

If you catch the dog peeing, interrupt the dog, pick it up and put it outside to finish and PRAISE and give the dog lots of treats when it pees outside. Make sure you make "going to the bathroom outside" an amazing experience for the dog. If he looks forward to the praise and attention he gets for going outside, he is more likely to look forward to going outside than on your rug.

Also, try keeping the dog away from the rug for a while. Only allow him on the rug when you are present; keep him leashed and PAY ATTENTION to the dog. If he begins pacing like he is going to pee, take him outside. Is your dog crate-trained? Crates are a great way to avoid these failures. If you are not able to monitor your dogs activities, put him in his crate. If it is small enough that he can't escape a mess in the crate, then he won't pee in it. And you won't have to worry as to whether your dog is getting into trouble, since you'll know exactly where he is!

While I understand this is a tedious process, the object of this work is to set your dog up for success. By doing that, your dog and you will live much happier together!

I hope this helps!!! Good luck :yay: :yay:

if your liitle one has a certain spot,on the rug she/he enjoys more then others..try a 75%/25% dawn dish soap and water..in a spray bottle, lightly spray the area and let air dry..this also helps on chew spots!!!

did you spray the area with a pet stain neutralizing agent? Sometimes pups will still pee/poo where they can still smell thier scent.

We've tried several sprays purchased at PetSmart. Doesn't seem to do any good. She is housebroken and the only time we have "accidents" is when we put the rug down. We will try the Dawn soap spray.

Yes she is crate trained but don't keep here in it other than to sleep at night. We have another, much larger dog and they play together during the day so keeping her in the crate during the day when we are not home is not really an option.

Do you have a fenced in yard? Could you put the dogs outside when you are not able to focus on her behavior?

Focus and behavior is not the issue, just the one spot. They are outside as much as possible...about an acre fenced in. I would like to focus on her behavior, however 10+ hours of work everyday seems to get in the way.

We pick up the rug, no problems, however we paid $$$$$$$$ for the rug to match our sitting room and would like to use it. The issue is with doggie as a pup a year ago. She peed on it once and marked the spot. Just trying to "erase" the spot on the rug so that we can enjoy our $$$$$$$$ non-stinkin' rug.

Some rugs are dyed with a urine based dye....animals pee on rugs to mark over the foreign urine smell. Rugs from India, China, are sometimes urine dyed.

I know you think she's housebroken and I'm sure she is, for the most part. The fact is, if she was completely housebroken, she would not go on the rug. If you go back to "refresher" course in housetraining, with a strict bathroom schedule and while the rug is in place, she may learn to ignore the rug and expect to go out at certain times.

Have you tried Nature's Miracle? I've heard good things about it. I've also heard a mixture of warm water and white vinegar works well as an odor remover.

I had a cat pee in my new car when I was in Puerto Rico. Boy I was mad. Anyway a friend told me to use straight vinegar on it. So I soaked it with vinegar and then it really smelled (of course the tropical temps didn't help) but after awhile the smell faded out and you couldn't smell the pee or vinegar anymore. So straight vinegar and let it air dry.

I tried the vinegar trick and while it does remove the odor it doesn't remove the scent. I tried it with my cat and he went back to the same spot.

Did you try natures miracle? I had some success with it.
