Puppy Question

My puppy is almost 10 weeks old and I have a question. It seems to take her 12 or more hours to eliminate her food. She is only 1.6lbs and I would think it wouldn't take her this long at all.

We noticed she was straining to go when she did go and we switched her to a wet little chunks food and that has helped it ease up but it still takes her hours to eliminate. Is this normal?

Did you change the type of food she was eating?

You wanna be careful switching foods on her too. She might end up with a nasty case of diarrhea. :yucky:

The lady I got her from gave me food but it seemed that it was too big and too hard for her to eat so I put her on Iams puppy food. When we noticed that she was straining so much we put her on Iams little bites.

It's not dry but it's not out of a can. Its in a pouch.

Try taking the Iams puppy food and adding some water to it to soften it. That will add more water to her system and allow her to have less strainful poopies.

I tried that and she didn't want nothing to do with it then. I guess she didn't like how it tasted.

Thanks for the help!! She came home Thursday night so maybe she is still gettin used to her new environment.

:yeahthat: Or vomiting.

Normally, a puppy should eliminate within an hour of eating, but that bowel movement would be the previous meal.
Hmmm... It's probably OK, though the straining part is worrisome - it might not be a bad idea to talk to a vet, if only to put your mind at ease.

I called the vet and the girl who answered the phone said that it's fine and that each puppy has a different schedule. I'll watch her close for the rest of week and if it doesn't change I'll call back.

I think she needs more exercise... I'm thinking you should get her a precious, loveable beagle to run and play with. PM me your address and I'll drop one off today. :yay:

When I first got my puppy he had the runs!!! I had him on the small breed ekunuba( Spell??) well the food was still causing problems for him, so I change him to a organic diet.. Yes you should not change his food. But you need to find one that works with his system. If he is that small then I would try a food that is really small in bites. My pup has Innova and he likes it allot. you could go to clippers in Solomon's and ask for samples for the pup then give him a few to see which one he like. Then see if it is good for his system. You should ask your Vet again. Because he might have something wrong. Just to be on the safe side. I have a Papillion and he craps at least 6 times a day and he is almost 5 LB. The smaller they are the less they can hold. If he is a big do then I could see a pup holding it for awhile. But you said you also notice that he looks uncomfortable. Now some dogs like to walk in a circle when pooping. But if he is straining then something is wrong. You really should ask your Vet.

1.6 lbs feed her at least 3 times a day so you don't have trouble with low blood sugar..
Yeah we feed her in the morning, at lunch and at dinnertime.

She is doing much better :yay: Maybe she just had to get used to her food. We have been keeping her on the wet food until her stomach worked out the kinks and if she continues to do well I'll start adding some dry in with the wet tomorrow.
