Puppy sick

My 14 week old Chi has been coughing and sneezing for the last 4 days and she seems to be running a fever but I am afraid to take her temp since she is so little. She only weighs 2 pounds. I have been giving her benedryl for her cough and this seems to help. Any suggestions until I can get her to her vet tomorrow?

I don't think Benadryl is for coughs. Benadryl or diphenhydramine is a first generation antihistamine. Unless puppy is having an allergic reation it probably isn't doing any good.

Google has a full list of meds you can give puppy. Hope it helps.

Take her temp. DO NOT GIVE HER ANY MEDS!

Her temp should not be higher than 102.5. Can you call her breeder to see if any of the other puppies are sick? What shots has she had?

I am not playing doctor I am asking questions? #####. Thanks for your help.

You're giving drugs for no reason other that pup is coughing and SEEMS to be running a fever. And what is correct dose for a 2 pound puppy anyway?
You guessing here?

Take pups temp and know for sure.

As Kain said, "I don't think Benadryl is for coughs. Benadryl or diphenhydramine is a first generation antihistamine. Unless puppy is having an allergic reation it probably isn't doing any good."

Dont go giving drugs unless you know what you are giving and why.

And dont go calling me a #####, I am trying to help before you make pup sicker with meds you have no idea how to give.

Is there any reason why you cant wait 12 hours till vet opens?

If puppy is eating, watering and going potty as usual, I would just hold off on meds and get the baby to a vet as soon as you can.

My BF's mother raises Chi's and I have one. She is a member of a group on Yahoo for Chi breeder's and has told me they are very helpful when she has questions and concerns. Might be something worth checking out.

Hope your puppy is okay.

Is she eating and drinking? You really need to get a temp on her. She is very tiny and can dehydrate quickly. Is she lethargic?

Thanks everyone - she is fine. She had her first round of shots on 12/22 and they said to give her the benedryl for the next couple of days -so when the cough started to get worse I gave it to her and it seemed to help. The vet said in her breed it is common for trach problems and to cough or snort as if clearing her throat - our other one does this also. She isnt running a temp. But the vet gave her a antibiotic shot and put her on an oral antibiotic just in case because she is coughing a lot more than "normal." Last night was horrible - it sounded like she had croup. So we are just to let her "chill" for a few days and keep an eye on her. :smoochy:

Can I have the yahoo site for the chi information?

If the vet said ok to over the counter go for it but I found out when my english sheep dog had to be put down that lots of meds are poisin to the dogs. I was giving her asprin for pain and luckily she was large enough that it didn't hurt her but could have been deadly in a smaller dog or breed. Glad all is ok its amazing how much they become our "babaies" and a part of our hearts

Glad she's ok! And don't be afraid to temp her. Her poop is bigger than a teeny little thermometer!
