Purgatory – A Grave Rejection of the Gospel

If you are going to post an author's refutation of Purgation, you could at least do your research first. His statement of where Catholics find scriptural evidence of Purgatory is flat out wrong.

1 Cor 3:15 "he himself will be saved but only as one escaping through the flames"

Luke 12:59, 1 Peter 1:7, Matthew 5:25-26--examples of temporal punishment.

Heb 12:6-11--God's painful discipline

Rev 21:27--nothing unclean shall enter heaven

Heb 12:23--souls in heaven "having been made perfect"

Col 1:24--"extra" suffering

King James Bible
He that is unjust, let him be unjust still: and he which is filthy, let him be filthy still: and he that is righteous, let him be righteous still: and he that is holy, let him be holy still.

And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

James 2:13 For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.

Luke 16:26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.

Do you know the definition of "cannot" in Luke 16:26? It means "cannot". Thayer's lexicon denies it categorically.

The passage also teaches against purgatory because purgatory suggests that people will change and this passage teaches that people will not change even if they know that Jesus rose from the dead:

Luke 16:30 And he said, Nay, father Abraham: but if one went unto them from the dead, they will repent.

Luke 16:31 And he said unto him, If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead.

It is kind of like this, Onel. People date and break up. They get back together again and I would never take someone back who wasn't married because they come back to the same conclusion.

So like the James passage that says he that showeth no mercy will get no mercy, this man doesn't get purgatory for similar reasons:

Luke 16:25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented.

And there are similar people in life who show no mercy and they will get no mercy and purgatory is a made up invention because God says that he who is filthy, let him be filthy still.

Your idea that people can come non-meritoriously really defeats the Catholic idea that merit or works is necessary and makes a case for justification by faith alone.

Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

You interpret the unclear verses from the clear verses. "He that believeth not shall be damned." It doesn't say he that "is baptized not shall be damned".

You can play literal or non literal word games all you want. The clear verses say if you believe not then you're damned and the White Throne judgment is standing room only. He that is filthy, let him be filthy still.

Well I'll be damned!
