Puter Problems

Would THIS face lie?
I got a new Dell about a year ago....It has Windows Vista on it...(Not too happy with that)...Here lately it is VERY slow starting up...It just got that way...I shut it down every night and the next morning it takes almost 10 minutes to get going...Sometimes I have to reboot and start all over again....Once it gets going, it seems to be OK....It has been doing some strange things too...It will open a blank page and the only way to get it off is to start task manager and end program like that...This morning when I left home the mouse arrow wouldn't move after its 10 minute warm up...I restarted it and had to get to work so I'll see when I get home if I have anything or not....Anyone have any ideas?

My first knee-jerk reaction is spy-ware has gotten on it... when you boot and it logs in, these spy-ware programs are launching in the background and "phoning home" - this eats up CPU cycles, I/O as well as network bandwidth.

Download Adaware and Spybot (for Vista) and run them to try to clean the crud out of it!

If you do not have so already, download some spy-ware protection - AVG has some good free stuff. AVG Free Advisor - Free antivirus and anti-spyware downloads

I'm thinking the same thing. You can pull the network plug to stop anything from using excessive network cycles once you get the software uploaded.

I tried the AVG anti-spyware product. It works well, but was stealing too much system resource on my older PC.

Windows Vista? Mistake. I had one of the Geeks at Best Buy trying like hell to convice me that Windows Vista was the greatest thing since sliced bread. I walked away unconvinced. Bought a new laptop from Dell this Christmas. Had XP put on it and no problems. :yay:

Don't shut your computer off, you won't have to turn it on and wait 10 minutes..

Problem solved.. NEXT!

My Dad's Dell used to do things like that. It was LOADED with spyware. He finally caved and bought a Mac. Problem solved. :yay:

Darn you geeks! Give the guy a break. We all have our pet hardware and software. Don't give the guy too many options, just fix his problem!

Honestly, I think the problem is that you shut it down every night. Think of it as a light bulb. You never see a bulb burn out while it's on. It's always after repeated on/off cycles.
