(CNN) -- One in five Americans believes the United States is winning the war in Iraq, according to a poll. The number has dropped by half since December.
About the same number -- 18 percent -- believe insurgents are winning. But the majority, 60 percent, say no one is winning in Iraq.

The poll of 1,013 adult Americans interviewed by telephone found two-thirds -- 64 percent -- of those polled oppose the war in Iraq.

A majority, 57 percent, want the United States to announce it will pull all troops by a certain date. The Bush administration argues against setting a timetable, saying it would embolden the enemy. But the onslaught of daily violence has apparently soured public support for the war.

Conducted over the past three days by Opinion Research Corp., the poll also found increased pessimism for the "war on terrorism." Sixty percent are dissatisfied with the way things are going for the United States in that effort, up from 53 percent in September.

And no I don't. I think this is a lose/lose war. Give democracy to a largely Shi'ite population and you end up with an extremist government in place, as a majority Shi'ite population will vote with their religion more than their political beliefs. The Sunni's though just downright hate us, mainly because we label terrorists as Sunni and only Sunni. By the way, al-Qaida and Hezbollah are majority Shi'ite.

Split the country into three or give it back to Saddam.

Currently, no we are not. We could, if the admin would do it right, but they've been muddling around with the whole thing. Replace Rummy and let's get this thing done.

Of course you don't think we can win. You are a defeatist. Your solution was to never have gone into Iraq in the first place, demand more inspections and UNRs after 12 years, 17 failed UNRs, all failed diplomacy. You’d have preferred Saddam still be torturing, raping and killing his own people by the 100s of 1000s, threatening his neighbors and snubbing his nose at the international community. You would have kept us in the impossible position of wondering where he was with his pursuit of WMD (especially nukes) and his ties with terrorists. You would have kept us wondering if he would have used WMD again or sold them to the terrorists. Your mentality of appeasement, post-911, would have made sure Saddam remained as dangerous as everyone (pre-911) believed he was to include dozens and dozens of democrats that are now against this war. Oh, and I love your solution… Give Iraq back to Saddam. I have complained you folks on the left have no solutions. You, Andy, just proved me wrong.
