OK, how far in advance should they or is standard ops to turn on the yellow flashers. I hate the ones that see you coming and when you get to funkyland they turn them on. also hate it when they turn them on 1/2 mile before they stop.
I hate the yellow lights. I never know when/if I should stop. The other day I was meeting a bus with its yellow lights on. Just as we were nose to nose, and neither at a complete stop yet, I decided at that point it made sense to just move forward. The driver blew his horn at me. I didn't feel like I was at fault. If I had continued braking to a stop, as well as the bus, we would have already been past each other.

Minimum distance prior to stop for activating the amber lights is 100 feet, no maximum distance is given (see Md. TRANSPORTATION Code Ann. § 22-228(d)).
As Vrai stated you don't have to stop until the bus has stopped and is displaying the red lights (see Md. TRANSPORTATION Code Ann. § 21-706) and then one must be stopped 20 feet in front of the bus.
So, If I'm 200 feet out when they go red, I can slow and creep until they go back yellow as long as I dont breach the 20 foot margin? I ask because I do this on the bike sometimes. while we are on the subject, let me give a shout out to the school bus drivers that service 5 between GMR and SMC between 0645 and 0730ish, and Willows too. A bigger bunch of considerate drivers I couldnt wish for. Delaying red for a few seconds to let a couple more drivers get by, pulling over to let built up traffic behind them move past, hanging on Hermanville for 20 extra seconds to let get past before pulling out. Kudos, drivers, kudos to you all
