Question about Speed Limit Signs

I've notice that SHA has installed these yellow rectangles on two of the island's speed limit signs. One is on the first sign after coming onto the island. The second (shown on photo) is were maintenance responsibility transitions from the County to SHA. None of the other speed limit signs on the island have them.

Does anybody know what they mean?

Is there a change in posted speed? They have them coming down 4 in Calvert where it drops to 45.

If I may ...
For your consideration ...

Looked everywhere for a descriptive reason for a wordless yellow rectangle above a white speed limit sign, nothing. Other than "Type 2 Object Markers (obstructions adjacent to the roadway)" on page 436. This is a pretty exhaustive informational Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices Maryland State Highway Administration 2011 Edition for Streets and Highways.

Perhaps someone else can glean the necessary information from this 1000 page document? Which happens to be the latest one.

Maybe it's just there to bring further attention to the speed limit sign? The same yellow rectangles are on the signs going to and leaving Solomons Island.

From what I can see on my phone, it's really just a way to get people to pay attention to the sign. Especially if the sign is new or has recently changed. People pay attention to yellow more than white.

It looks to me like it's for visibility. Sometimes those speed limit signs are easy to overlook, and the yellow bar makes it stand out.

Dunno, just a thought.

My guess is left over Covid money that had to be spent or else returned so some secretary in an office somewhere said I like yellow and then someone else overheard her and said I like rectangles so they had a bunch of yellow rectangles made with the leftover Covid money. One day the SHA road supervisor came into her cubicle and saw these yellow rectangles hanging all over. By this time she was getting tired of this color so she asked the supervisor if he would like them. He said sure - I know an island down in SMC where that color would look good hanging on a speed limit sign.

And that’s how the yellow rectangle was born.

Everytime I glance at the thread title the song "Chattanooga City Limit Sign" comes to mind.
