Question for dog owners...

We have a rottie/husky mix. During the summer I kept him shaved, slacking off in December. So his hair has grown all through December and January. Looking at him in the sunlight, he has some patches that haven't grown in at all on the top of his back. Is this from shaving him all through the summer, or could it be from stress?? TYIA.

I don't know how old your dog is, but honestly doesn't matter. It could be stress, but a lot of the time that is one of the first signs that your dog could have a thyroid problem. The only way to know that for sure is to have your dog's vet send out a simple blood test. And if that is what the problem is, then he will have to be on medication but luckily the medication is very inexpensive.

Most places try to discourage shaving down double coated breeds for this reason. A lot of people shave the dog regularly with no problems until one time, the hair doesn't grow back properly or even at all.

If you shaved him because you think it keeps him cooler by not having the hair, unfortunately you shaved off the layer of fur that was keeping him cooler. The undercoat acts as insulation-cool in the summer, warm in the winter. If you shaved because you were tired of the shedding, I recommend just brushing him out properly and getting bathed regularly. You will notice a difference.

I really don't know. I have a maltese and I shave him very close in the summer. In the winter I let him get longer and he can grow and grow hair.

Thank you karma giver. I took him to a groomer, he always seems a lot happier when he is shaved, so this is why we kept it up. Thinking that since he is not a full husky, if that is even what he is mixed with, he doesn't have the full thick double coat...kind of a thinner version.

Thanks for the answers/suggestions. I kind-of figured that if he was stressed then the seizures might occur more often, which they haven't. (another reason we shaved him, because during the seizures he becomes so overheated unshaved)
