Question for parents of 8th graders

bresamil said:
On average, how many hours of homework per night does your 8th grader have assigned?
My son has very little homework this year. He is always done with it before I get home.

Disclaimer: Interim reports haven't been issued yet, so there is no indication yet as to whether he has been doing it all or has been doing it right yet.

Our teachers assign between 2.5 and 4 hours a night.

Don't your children go to Catholic school?

I remember being in the 8th grade and having a mass amount of homework every night of about 2-4 hours also.

I noticed a common theme about teachers who assign tons of homework. Most of them are not teaching in class. They're sending the kids home with all this work expecting the parents to teach them how to do it. Just my experience, but you may want to keep it in mind.

Be about it
I attended St. John's and we had 3 hours on average, but most times more. It was unreal. There's no time for kids to unwind and relax w/that kind of evening pressure.

I've observed the same thing myself. Last year, my son struggled, barely got by with C's and better and averaged about 2-3 hours of homework every night. This year he is A/B'ing everything, seems more organized and on top of things and only has about 1 hour worth of homework.

I did pick parochial school and they are trying, I guess, to teach every class to a college prep level. But I took college prep, got my bachelors' even my master's and never had 4 hours ASSIGNED per night. I might give myself that much - adding in additional readings or research - but I was never ASSIGNED more than 2-3 hours.
He is really overwhelmed. And they are spouting the "we are coordinating our assignments" crap so that this doesn't happen. But he has 4 tests today that he had to study for, plus a math assignment, and this really intense novel analyzation that had to be turned in today.
It would have taken me 6 hours to do it all. He is really stressing out. He knew this was coming and decided against soccer and now may drop band. Still they'll pressure him to join basketball and LEO club and all these other things. And don't forget community service hours. He needs those for confirmation. When will he fit them in?

:yeahthat:

My kids have told me(and I believe it) that the teachers they get the most homework from all into two categories:

1) They spend most of their time trying to get the little miscreants to STFU.

2) The teacher starts talking, goes off on a tangent, and never comes back to the original subject and ends up assigning it as homework.

My son is an 8th grader at Spring Ridge. Every evening I have to look at his agenda book and I also go through his book bag. 90% of the time, I find that he has more homework then he claims to have. Usually his excuse is I FORGOT. But once he gets it all done it is usually about 2.5 - 3 hours.

That describes one of them to a T.

Classwork should never be assigned as homework. Homework is to be used as a means to practice what has been taught at school. If the classwork is not finished in school (I am talking about a class as a whole, not individual students not completing work.) teaching has not finished. needs to be done the next day.

I believe St. Marys County has a homework guideline. I believe it is 10 minutes of homework for each year of school so an 8th grader should have 1 hour and 20 minutes of homework a night.
