Charles Co. Question on gun registration?

I am considering a purchase of a shotgun from a friend of mine. Nothing special, just a Remington 870. If I go ahead and purchase this from a private individual, am I required to register this weapon? Any help would be appreciated.

I realize you are purchasing from a friend but do you know the whole history of the firearm? If you call the local sheriffs office and provide them the serial number they will run it for you free of charge. I have done it a few times and didn't even have to provide my name. I think the State Police will do it also.

Nope don't do that, they don't need to be involved.

I would certainly rather find out a bad history before I own it than have to explain possession of a stolen or felony tied firearm at some later time. I have never had to provide any information other than the serial number. Maybe if it came back as bad then they would start asking questions. At that time I don't own it so it is up to the seller to explain their possession.

I wouldn't call it in. Maybe go in person with your friend with the shotgun unloaded in your trunk (ready for them to retrieve) with the serial # written down on paper. I mean i've never had anything but lots of pretty fine experiences with C.C.S.D but why take a chance? Who's to say that it wouldn't come back stolen then they get a warrant and flip your buddy's house upside down etc etc. Or heck your house from the phone call. On the ohter hand if you know he bought it new so you know the full history, no need at all.. And no need to ever have a record of that serial # tied to you.

Follow the law. Law says you don't need to register it or confirm a S/N through the local PD.

Thanks to all for your responses. It seems that there is no legal requirement to register the shotgun so I will not be doing so. As for having the police run the serial number, I am still considering it but haven't made my mind up yet. I will check with the current gun owner to see if he can shed a little more light on its history. Again, thanks to all!

How many people even have a record of the serial numbers on every long gun they own?
I do, I kid not. I have a bound book of where every firearm I have sold or given away went. Even guns with no paper trail to me, I know where they went.

If it's never been registered law enforcement won't have any records to search.
Unlike a rifle, there is little forensically that can be done to trace the load to a particular gun.

LE calls the manufacturer to find out what distributer they sold the firearm to, the distributer will tell them what gun store it was sold to.
The store will have the 4473 of who purchased the firearm. If the store will s out of business atf has the Federal form. And from there they try to go person to person or the store the person sold it to to.
The trail gets completed more often than one would think.
