Quran 10:In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.
1. Alif, Lam, Ra. These are the Verses of the Wise Book.
2. Is it a wonder to the people that We inspired a man from among them: “Warn mankind, and give good news to those who believe that they are on a sound footing with their Lord”? The disbelievers said, “This is a manifest sorcerer.”
3. Your Lord is God, who created the heavens and the earth in six days, then settled over the Throne, governing all things. There is no intercessor except after His permission. Such is God, your Lord—so serve Him. Will you not reflect?
4. To Him is your return, altogether. The promise of God is true. He originates creation, and then He repeats it, to reward those who believe and do good deeds with equity. As for those who disbelieve, for them is a drink of boiling water, and agonizing torment, on account of their disbelief.
5. It is He who made the sun radiant, and the moon a light, and determined phases for it—that you may know the number of years and the calculation. God did not create all this except with truth. He details the revelations for a people who know.
6. In the alternation of night and day, and in what God created in the heavens and the earth, are signs for people who are aware.
7. Those who do not hope to meet Us, and are content with the worldly life, and are at ease in it, and those who pay no heed to Our signs.
8. These—their dwelling is the Fire—on account of what they used to do.
9. As for those who believe and do good deeds, their Lord guides them in their faith. Rivers will flow beneath them in the Gardens of Bliss.
10. Their call therein is, “Glory be to You, our God.” And their greeting therein is, “Peace.” And the last of their call is, “Praise be to God, Lord of the Worlds.”
This chapter is named "Jonah".
From the 10th to the 16th chapter is a group of seven chapters, which all — with the exception of the last — begin with the abbreviation alif, låm, rå, and may be called the alif låm rå group. They all belong to the last Makkan period, the last four years of the Prophet’s life at Makkah, and deal with the truth of prophethood with more or less reference to the histories of the earlier prophets, four of them being named after a prophet.
The whole of creation is, notwithstanding its variety, subject to one law, and clearly bears witness to the unity of its Maker. And just as the visible universe is subject to law, there is also a law working in the spiritual world.
The light of faith, which is even here a guiding principle of man’s actions, will assume a more palpable form in the life after death. Compare 57:12, where it is called the light running, or gleaming, before them.
If I weren't posting this on-line.... where my feet are held to the coals..... I would quit reading. I thought when I got to Jonah.... I would see a story.... but nope.... so far it's just more of the same.
Jonah was a man God tapped to warn the people of Nineveh. He has his own book.
Noah had three sons.... Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Ham was cursed not long after the flood for saying something to Noah. Noah was naked at the time. It was a big deal. Anyway, according to Genesis 10:11, one of Ham's off spring... Cush.... went to Syria and built Nineveh.... the town. Now these were Ham's offspring.... so they were cursed by Noah anyway.... so they did as they pleased.... there wasn't a lot of Bible teaching or Synagogue teaching back then in Nineveh.
According to the book of Jonah.... in the Bible.... God decided to do away with Nineveh if they didn't change their ways. So he sent Jonah. Now Jonah knows what happens to the guy who walks into a bar and starts telling people to stop drinking..... or what happens to the guy who walks into a bar and tells everyone to put on a mask.... and he wanted no part of that beating. So Jonah decided to run away.... but God wanted him to think about what he was doing.... so God... who created everything.... sent a whale [big fish] to swallow Jonah right off the top of the water. Then God had the whale [big fish] spit Jonah out.... landing him on the shore. Jonah, having learned his lesson about God.... went on to Nineveh and spread his horror story. He was sure he was going to be beat to death.
But Nineveh changed..... and God didn't destroy them. That made Jonah angry..... and in the Bible.... Jonah told God what he thought.... to which God replied.... "hey, when was the last time you created a universe? I'll do as I please and you will do as you are told."
Now... according to the commentary... Jonah was one of the prophets both the Jewish and the Muslim religions talk about. There's no big whale of big fish.... so far.... but I'll keep my eyes out..... well one of them anyway.... looking for a fish.
Jonah.... that's what this chapter is about.... Jonah and his faith.
