Quran 10:83. But none believed in Moses except some children of his people, for fear that Pharaoh and his chiefs would persecute them. Pharaoh was high and mighty in the land. He was a tyrant.
84. Moses said, “O my people, if you have believed in God, then put your trust in Him, if you have submitted.”
85. They said, “In God we have put our trust. Our Lord, do not make us victims of the oppressive people.”
86. “And deliver us, by Your mercy, from the disbelieving people.”
87. And We inspired Moses and his brother, “Settle your people in Egypt, and make your homes places of worship, and perform the prayer, and give good news to the believers.”
88. Moses said, “Our Lord, you have given Pharaoh and his chiefs splendor and wealth in the worldly life. Our Lord, for them to lead away from Your path. Our Lord, obliterate their wealth, and harden their hearts, they will not believe until they see the painful torment.”
89. He said, “Your prayer has been answered, so go straight, and do not follow the path of those who do not know.”
90. And We delivered the Children of Israel across the sea. Pharaoh and his troops pursued them, defiantly and aggressively. Until, when he was about to drown, he said, “I believe that there is no god except the One the Children of Israel believe in, and I am of those who submit.”
91. Now? When you have rebelled before, and been of the mischief-makers?
92. Today We will preserve your body, so that you become a sign for those after you. But most people are heedless of Our signs.
Wow... this is interesting commentary....
The Israelites believed in Moses as the verses that follow show. By his people, therefore, are meant Pharaoh’s wife (66:11) and a believer (40:28). The word dhurriyyah means offspring, and according to I‘Ab means here qalßl or a few.
The qiblah is that facing which one prays, and therefore it indicates a place of worship. The Israelites were obliged to pray in their houses because they did not enjoy full religious liberty in Egypt and had no public places of worship.
The låm here — translated as that — is really what is called låm ‘aqibat or the låm used to indicate the end. The significance is, not that God had granted them riches to mislead people, but that this was the end for which they used their riches.
Pharaoh and his people did not care for either arguments or signs. Moses therefore now prays for their punishment. Shadda ‘alai-hi also means he assaulted him, and God’s assaulting their hearts (“harden their hearts”) would mean depriving them of that which their hearts desired.
In the agonies of death, pronounced atheists have sometimes recognized the existence of God.
That the body was really cast ashore, though the Bible does not mention it, is clear from the fact that the body of Rameses II, who is regarded as the Pharaoh of Moses, has been discovered as preserved among the mummies in Egypt (En. Br. Art. Mummy). This is another instance of the insufficiency of the Bible narrative and of the truth of the Quranic statement where it supplements the Bible. The discovery now made could not have been known to the Holy Prophet; it was not known to any person in the world till very recently.
Now I don't know what to think. Ramses II was supposed to be the Pharaoh of Moses time. The Quran says the body was spit to shore like Jonah's was when Ramses decided to Believe. The commentary says, truthfully, the Bible doesn't have that part in it. Boy I can just imagine what Hollywood would have done with that little tidbit.
I can see it now.... Ramses II..... looking like Superman.... holding the reins to his horses in one hand and his fancy staff in the other, standing in his chariot.... sure Hollywood would save the horses and the chariot..... with big fancy words above his head..... "Ramses III Believes!" Oh brother.....
Yep.... they found Ramses II.... He was buried in the Valley of the Kings in southern Egypt. So Ramses II and his men washed ashore after the Sea closed in on them during their pursuit of Moses and the 2,000,000 refugees. Ramses II probably did Believe as he was drowning. He might have even thought.... "dam".
Maybe Ramses II and his men weren't really drowned.... maybe loosing 2,000,000 good working slaves killed the economy and the Pharaoh was just washed up politically. And.... to add insult to injury.... the first born was dead..... from the plagues God sent on Egypt. There was no great Pharaoh to really pass the torch to. Remember... they thought Pharaoh was a god.... I don't know if all of Pharaoh's little babies were little gods or if they were just normal... with only the first born blessed with the title. At any rate.... whoever Ramses II passed the torch to.... well that would always be a second choice.
Just goes to show..... Jonah might have been "spit out" in the same way in the Bible.... in the Quran Ramses II was "spit out" too.... they found him on the shore....
At any rate.... Now we know the "rest of the story".
