Quran 11: In the name of God, the Gracious, the Merciful.
1. Alif, Lam, Ra. A Scripture whose Verses were perfected, then elaborated, from One who is Wise and Informed.
2. That you shall worship none but God. “I am a warner to you from Him, and a bearer of good news.”
3. “And ask your Lord for forgiveness, and repent to Him. He will provide you with good sustenance until a stated term, and will bestow His grace on every possessor of virtue. But if you turn away, then I fear for you the punishment of a grievous Day.”
4. “To God is your return, and He is Capable of all things.”
5. They wrap their chests to hide from Him. But even as they cover themselves with their clothes, He knows what they conceal and what they reveal. He knows what lies within the hearts.
6. There is no moving creature on earth but its sustenance depends on God. And He knows where it lives and where it rests. Everything is in a Clear Book.
7. It is He who created the heavens and the earth in six days—and His Throne was upon the waters—in order to test you—which of you is best in conduct. And if you were to say, “You will be resurrected after death,” those who disbelieve would say, “This is nothing but plain witchcraft.”
8. And if We postponed their punishment until a stated time, they would say, “What holds it back?” On the Day when it reaches them, it will not be averted from them, and what they used to ridicule will besiege them.
This is from the commentary.
The name of this chapter is taken from that of the Prophet H∂d, whose history is referred to herein. He seems to have been the first prophet to a people living in the Arabian peninsula.
He covered himself with his garment, in order that he might not see nor hear. According to R, the meaning is that they make their garments a covering over their ears, and this signifies their holding back from lending an ear, or it is an allusion to their running away.
What is the relation between water and the manifestation of the Power of God, for which the ‘arsh stands? This is explained by the Qur’ån itself: “And We made from water everything living”. Man is the highest developed form of life, and life is due to water. The great power of God which is manifested in the creation of man is thus connected with water. And as physical life grows out of water, so spiritual life grows out of revelation, which is so often compared with rain or water. God’s great power has thus been made manifest through water, and hence with the creation of the heavens and the earth is mentioned the fact that God’s Throne of Power is ever on the waters.
The two words balå-hu and ibtalå-hu are synonymous and mean originally the manifestation of good qualities and mean qualities. The object of the creation of man and all that has been brought into existence is that the great qualities with which man is endowed should be manifested. But that manifestation, we are told in the words that follow, takes place, not in this life, but in the life after death. This truth is expressed in the words, if thou sayest, You shall surely be raised up after death. For the use of the words, balå and ibtalå, in the sense of the manifestation of the great and good qualities with which man is endowed.
One of my favorite characters in the Old Testament is a left handed swordsman named Ehud. You will find Ehud in Judges 3:12-30. Alas... the commentaries and the inquiries say that Hud and Ehud are not the same guy..... but Hud isn't in the Bible.... but Ehud is. Ehud killed the King of Moab. The King of Moab was a cruel enemy. But.... no one is saying that Hud and Ehud are the same guy.... so while reading this chapter.... I'm going to have my favorite left handed swordsman in mind.
Hud was a prophet. What we do in life reflects on what we will do after life.... according to Hud.
