Quran 16:51. God has said: “Do not take two gods; He is only One God; so fear only Me.”
52. To Him belongs everything in the heavens and the earth; and to Him obedience is due always. Do you, then, fear anyone other than God?
53. Whatever blessing you have is from God. And when harm touches you, it is to Him that you groan.
54. But when He lifts the harm from you, some of you associate others with their Lord.
55. To show ingratitude for what We have given them. Enjoy yourselves. You will soon know.
56. And they allocate, to something they do not know, a share of what We have provided for them. By God, you will be questioned about what you have been inventing.
57. And they attribute to God daughters—exalted is He—and for themselves what they desire.
58. And when one of them is given news of a female infant, his face darkens, and he chokes with grief.
59. He hides from the people because of the bad news given to him. Shall he keep it in humiliation, or bury it in the dust? Evil is the decision they make.
60. Those who do not believe in the Hereafter set a bad example, while God sets the Highest Example. He is the Mighty, the Wise.
61. If God were to hold mankind for their injustices, He would not leave upon it a single creature, but He postpones them until an appointed time. Then, when their time arrives, they will not delay it by one hour, nor will they advance it.
62. And they attribute to God what they themselves dislike, while their tongues utter the lie that theirs is the goodness. Without a doubt, for them is the Fire, and they will be neglected.
63. By God, We sent messengers to communities before you, but Satan made their deeds appear alluring to them. He is their master today, and they will have a painful punishment.
64. We revealed to you the Scripture only to clarify for them what they differ about, and guidance and mercy for people who believe.
65. God sends down water from the sky, with which He revives the earth after its death. In this is a sign for people who listen.
This is the commentary for today's verses.
That is, for the idols or their gods, whom they ignorantly take for intercessors.
The allusion is to the barbarous custom of burying daughters alive, which was prevalent among the Arabs, especially among their chiefs. Its abolition was one of the numerous blessings of Islåm. With no physical or administrative power behind it to ensure its enforcement, the word of Allåh swept away this deep-rooted custom as if by a magician’s wand, so that not a single case of the burial of a living girl ever occurred after the mandate came. Attention is drawn to the inconsistency of their avowed beliefs with their inward convictions in v. 62; see 62a. 62a. The reference is to their ascribing daughters to Allåh, while they themselves did not like to have a daughter, thus showing how obviously inconsistent with their inward convictions was their professed belief in the Divine Being.
The previous verse shows that the whole world was in the grip of the devil at the advent of the Prophet. It speaks of messengers having been sent to all nations before the coming of the Prophet, but adds that, as time passed, the followers of the messengers, instead of following their teachings, followed evil ways, which gradually appeared to them so beautiful that the good of this world was all in all for them. This verse shows that the teachings of the previous prophets had been distorted to such an extent that a new Prophet was now needed to lead them aright. Truth had been obscured to such an extent that it could not now be discovered without light from heaven. It also establishes that the new Prophet’s message was for the followers of all religions; in other words, for the whole world.
The water from heaven is the Divine revelation, the death of the earth is its corruption, and the giving of life signifies its spiritual awakening, marvellous signs of which had already appeared in Arabia.
Wow.... they buried female babies alive!!!!
That's what it says.... they were so enamored with power.... only a male baby would do! They needed a male heir so they could continue their reign.
We worry about abortion like it's something new..... I guess they had herbs and knowledge.... and sharp objects.... they might have even had some kind of suction machine.... but they didn't have ultrasound... there was no way to tell the sex of the baby until it was born..... I mean we're talking the 600's not modern day. So when a man of good fortune and much power was told he had a daughter..... he would have the baby taken out and buried alive.
I don't know what else to say.... I'm just taken aback this morning. I didn't have a clue that male dominance was so horrifying.
If the rich and powerful did away with all their baby girls.... who would they turn to when it was time to raise a new generation. Women carry the babies. Women are a necessary part of the human reproductive program. Without women there is no womb.
We have all heard of test tube babies..... there were no test tubes back then. There were no hormone shots. There were no mechanical wombs capable of gestation back in 600 AD. If they couldn't tell what the sex of the baby was... until it was born.... they surely didn't have a mechanical womb.
Verse 59 says they choose evil and bury the female infant alive. Ponder that..... does that put Roe in perspective? Does that put making Mary a goddess in perspective?
They buried female babies alive! #metoo?
