Quran 17:101. We gave Moses nine clear signs—ask the Children of Israel. When he went to them, Pharaoh said to him, “I think that you, Moses, are bewitched.”
102. He said, “You know that none sent these down except the Lord of the heavens and the earth—eye openers; and I think that you, Pharaoh, are doomed.”
103. He resolved to scare them off the land, but We drowned him, and those with him, altogether.
104. After him, We said to the Children of Israel, “Inhabit the land, and when the promise of the Hereafter arrives, We will bring you all together.”
105. With the truth We sent it down, and with the truth it descended. We sent you only as a bearer of good news and a warner.
106. A Quran which We unfolded gradually, that you may recite to the people over time. And We revealed it in stages.
107. Say, “Believe in it, or do not believe.” Those who were given knowledge before it, when it is recited to them, they fall to their chins, prostrating.
108. And they say, “Glory to our Lord. The promise of our Lord is fulfilled.”
109. And they fall to their chins, weeping, and it adds to their humility.
110. Say, “Call Him God, or call Him the Most Merciful. Whichever name you use, to Him belong the Best Names.” And be neither loud in your prayer, nor silent in it, but follow a course in between.
111. And say, “Praise be to God, who has not begotten a son, nor has He a partner in sovereignty, nor has He an ally out of weakness, and glorify Him constantly.”
Here's the commentary for this morning. These nine signs are detailed in 7:133, where it is shown that they agree with the signs mentioned in Exodus. These signs are the rod, the shining hand, the drought, the loss of fruits, widespread death, the locusts, the lice, the frogs and the blood.
Istafazza-h∂ means he unsettled him, and also he deceived him so as to cast him into destruction, and he slew him.
By the land is meant the land promised to the Israelites; Moses had asked Pharaoh to allow his people to leave Egypt to settle in the Holy Land.
The latter promise here relates to the promise given to Moses for the raising up of another prophet like him. This is corroborated by what is said in the next verse about the revelation of the Qur’ån, which came with truth, i.e., in fulfilment of a true promise. By the rolling up of the Israelites is meant that they would make way for another people, who would inherit the kingdom of God.
The promise spoken of here is no doubt the promise given to the former prophets regarding the advent of the Holy Prophet; and by knowledge in the previous verse is also meant knowledge of the prophecies.
The name Raƒmån (Beneficent) seems to have been particularly objectionable to the Arabs, who objected to its use even so late as the truce at Ïudaibiyah. The Christians also do not recognize Allåh to be Raƒmån, because it means that Allåh shows mercy to His creatures without their having done anything to deserve it, while the Christian doctrine of atonement is based on the belief that Allåh cannot show mercy to His creatures without receiving some satisfaction.
The two extremes with regard to prayer are its utterance in a very loud voice or not uttering any word at all with the tongue, thinking that Allåh knows what is in the hearts. The Muslims are told to take the middle course between the two extremes. Utterance of words makes the prayer go deeper down into the heart of man, and thus makes it more effective.
Just can't color verse 111. I believe Jesus is His only begotten son. I believe Jesus came to earth to conquer death. I believe only God's Son would have the power to deal with the death a fallen angel put into the spin. So I believe God has one son who was begotten on earth using a human woman's womb. I do not believe the woman was a goddess.... God created everyone, everything and everywhere.... so it would be no big deal to borrow a womb He himself created from a thought.
I find it interesting that the Quran commentary deals so closely with the Biblical stories. Nine plagues were sent on Egypt before God made Pharaoh get off his throne and let Moses take the refugees to the land God had carved out for them. It took nine plagues because Egypt had become dependent on the work force.... slave labor. Now... Joseph, an Israelite, son of Jacob.... helped Egypt survive a horrible famine. Joseph had been arrested for not sleeping with a woman. She lied and he got jailed. He had a talent for interpreting dreams and he interpreted pharaoh's dreams to avoid the coming famine to get himself out of prison. For that he was put in a prestigious position..... but over the years.... after the Egyptians were use to being rich on the toil of the Israelites..... it was nearly impossible for them to replace the Israelite work force... no matter who was shaking a stick at pharaoh. Things had to get despicable for pharaoh to release the slave labor.
So.... the Nine Clear Signs are listed. Moses took over 2 million people with him when he left Egypt. There were a lot of Israelites in Egypt... and even they owned slaves... and there were venders who were dependent on the Israelites as well... so they left with them. The women and children weren't even counted.
I have another problem with these verses in the Quran. Apparently the Christian Doctrine of Atonement..... says we can't have salvation unless we earn it. I don't buy that either... who thinks these things up.
I can't earn my way into Salvation. I have to ask for it.... I have to ask Him to forgive me.... is that what they mean?
If I do 99 great things.... and God wants 100 great accomplishments before He will let me in... who's keeping count?
God is God.... He offers Salvation to everyone.... and He knows how each of us is going to respond before we do.... not because He wills us to do it... but because God created the future and He knows what the future holds. He knew what we would do before we were a twinkle in our great great grandparent's eye. I can't earn anything from God... I owe my existence to Him.... I can't earn His favor... but I'm grateful that He sees fit to offer it to me.
So the title of this set of verses, according to the commentary.... is "Nine Clear Signs".
I'm glad the Quran agrees there were nine clear signs.... I'm sorry the Christian Church got the story of Jesus and Forgiveness so mucked up.
Before Moses was given the green light to move the refugees out.....
There were Nine Clear Signs.....
