Quran 26:141. Thamood disbelieved the messengers.
142. When their brother Saleh said to them, “Do you not fear?
143. I am to you a faithful messenger.
144. So fear God, and obey me.
145. I ask of you no payment for it. My payment is only from the Lord of the Worlds.
146. Will you be left secure in what is here?
147. In gardens and springs?
148. And fields, and palm-trees whose fruits are delicious?
149. And you skillfully carve houses in the mountains?
150. So fear God, and obey me.
151. And do not obey the command of the extravagant.
152. Who spread turmoil on earth, and do not reform.”
153. They said, “You are surely one of the bewitched.
154. You are nothing but a man like us. So bring us a sign, if you are truthful.
155. He said, “This is a she-camel; she has her turn of drinking, and you have your turn of drinking—on a specified day.
156. And do not touch her with harm, lest the punishment of a great day seizes you.”
157. But they slaughtered her, and became full of remorse.
158. So the punishment overtook them. Surely in this is a sign, but most of them are not believers.
159. Your Lord is the Almighty, the Merciful.

Here's today's commentary.

They are described in v. 149 as hewing houses out of the mountains, and, as it appears from here, the springs of water seem to have been few, and access to these was probably specially guarded, so that they were open only at particular times. For the she-camel, see 7:73c. ˝åli√ seems to have demanded that the she-camel should be allowed to drink at such times. See 54:28, where it is stated that every share of the water will be attended by the she-camel, or that she will have access to water at all times when the others are allowed to drink. A similar demand as regards her pasture is contained in 11:64 in the words “Leave her to pasture on Allåh’s earth”, followed by the same words as those following this demand for drink: “And touch her not with evil”.
The word shirb signifies either an act of drinking, or a share, or portion that falls to one’s lot, of water, or a watering place, or a time of drinking. And in law it signified the use of water for the watering of sown fields and of beasts (LL)
This is verse 7:73 from the Quran.

Quran 7:73 And to Thamood, their brother Saleh. He said, “O my people! Worship God; you have no god other than Him. Clarification has come to you from your Lord. This she-camel of God is a sign for you. So leave her to graze on God’s earth, and do her no harm, lest a painful penalty seizes you.”
This is verse 54:28 from the Quran.

Quran 54:28 And inform them that the water is to be shared between them; each share of drink made available.
This is verse 11:64 from the Quran.

Quran 11:64 “O my people, this is the she-camel of God, a sign for you. Let her graze on God’s land, and do not harm her, lest an imminent punishment overtakes you.”
So... all that copied and pasted..... I still didn't understand the story here..... until I googled the she camel in Thamond.... and this is what I learned.
The Prophet they are talking about here.... was Silih.... he was a bastard child and he was sent to Thamond to straighten them out. Of course no one believed him. They gave him a very specific sign.... they wanted a pregnant she camel to come out of the mountains... and get this .... she had to be 10 months pregnant.

So Silih talked to God and the she camel showed up. She was to be watered every other day.... and she was to drink all the water she desired.... but it left none for the others.

But when they milked her.... the milk was the best thing that ever passed their lips....and they began to crave it.

As all things go with us ignorant humans.... they grew tired of her drinking all the water every other day... and in spite of her magnificent milk.... they decided to slaughter her.... and when they beat her to the ground.... the camel baby [calf?] delivered itself and took off for the mountain..... it called out three times on the way.

The people hired a red complexioned, red haired man with blue eyes to kill the she camel.... and as soon as he ran her thru.... he felt remorse.... but the people of town started beating her... and they took all their pent up meanness on her. And when they had exhausted themselves and saw what they had done.... they felt remorse.... and they said... "what's going to happen now?".

Salih told them they would have three days to make things right..... or they would die.

The first day their faces would turn yellow.... on the second day their faces would turn red.... and on the third day, the final day.... their faces would turn black. And that's what happened.

At midnight on the third day... Gabriel came... and there was a loud noise..... and they all died.

They didn't believe.... even though they were given time. It's said they had 70 little gods... and not one of those gods helped anyone out.

That's the story of the she-camel in the Quran.
