Quran 24:58. O you who believe! Permission must be requested by your servants and those of you who have not reached puberty. On three occasions: before the Dawn Prayer, and at noon when you change your clothes, and after the Evening Prayer. These are three occasions of privacy for you. At other times, it is not wrong for you or them to intermingle with one another. God thus clarifies the revelations for you. God is Knowledgeable and Wise.
59. When the children among you reach puberty, they must ask permission, as those before them asked permission. God thus clarifies His revelations for you. God is Knowledgeable and Wise.
60. Women past the age of childbearing, who have no desire for marriage, commit no wrong by taking off their outer clothing, provided they do not flaunt their finery. But to maintain modesty is better for them. God is Hearing and Knowing.
61. There is no blame on the blind, nor any blame on the lame, nor any blame on the sick, nor on yourselves for eating at your homes, or your fathers’ homes, or your mothers’ homes, or your brothers’ homes, or your sisters’ homes, or the homes of your paternal uncles, or the homes of your paternal aunts, or the homes of your maternal uncles, or the homes of your maternal aunts, or those whose keys you own, or the homes of your friends. You commit no wrong by eating together or separately. But when you enter any home, greet one another with a greeting from God, blessed and good. God thus explains the revelations for you, so that you may understand.
62. The believers are those who believe in God and His Messenger, and when they are with him for a matter of common interest, they do not leave until they have asked him for permission. Those who ask your permission are those who believe in God and His Messenger. So when they ask your permission to attend to some affair of theirs, give permission to any of them you wish, and ask God’s forgiveness for them. God is Forgiving and Merciful.
63. Do not address the Messenger in the same manner you address one another. God knows those of you who slip away using flimsy excuses. So let those who oppose his orders beware, lest an ordeal strikes them, or a painful punishment befalls them.
64. Surely, to God belongs everything in the heavens and the earth. He knows what you are about. And on the Day they are returned to Him, He will inform them of what they did. God has full knowledge of all things.
This is the commentary.
Rules relating to personal and family privacy are of the utmost importance in the betterment of social relations, and their non-observance leads to all kinds of false reports, which scandal-mongers are always ready to lay hold upon, thereby creating dissensions in society.
Qå‘id (plural qawå‘id) signifies a woman who has ceased to bear children and to have the menstrual discharge (LL). The reference in putting off clothes is to the overgarment spoken of in 33:59.
The Arabs had their scruples in eating with the blind, etc., in which respect they were like the Jews and some other people. The Hindus to this day eat separately. Islåm lays down a middle rule, and allows the individual a great latitude in this respect. A man may eat alone or with others, he may eat with the maimed, etc., or he may eat in the houses of near relations and friends. The latter part of the verse shows that a certain degree of familiarity in the case of near relatives is recommended, so that one can take food with them, even though he may not have been invited specially.
It does not mean how the Prophet is to be addressed, but in what manner his call is to be responded to. The context makes it clear. The previous verse states that none is to leave without the Prophet’s permission, when they are gathered together for some important affair requiring their presence, and the words that follow this passage are to the same effect. What is stated here is that the Prophet’s call to the believers is to be respected, and not to be treated as their calling one of another; because the Prophet’s call relates to some important affair affecting the welfare of the community, while their mutual calling one of another relates to their own private affairs.
I'm a Christian.... I Believe Jesus is the only Begotten Son of God. I believe Mary was an ordinary girl who was used by God. She was not a goddess. She was just a girl. I know Jesus walked out of the tomb.... I don't think He just disappeared to another nation. Jesus is back in Heaven..... and God listens to Him when it comes to Humans and their dealings with temptation. I'm a Protestant... I Believe the Holy Spirit helps us interpret the Bible.... I don't have to wait for the preacher or the priest or the rabbi to tell me what the verse means. I have a direct interpreter because I am a Christian... I am a child of God and God wants me to know these things. On top of that... I'm an old woman.... way past the age of childbearing. I don't have to worry about enticing the opposite sex to procreate. I'm here for my sage advice, apparently. I've seen a lot and done a lot. I'm an old woman who has never really cared if anyone likes me or not. I learned a long time ago that I'm the only one that is constantly around me.... so I had to learn to like myself. If I don't own up to someone else's expectation.... well that's sad... but so far it hasn't been earth shattering news.
Jesus ate with the blind, lame, and wretched. Jesus ate with whores and pimps. Jesus ate with money grubbing tax collectors. Jesus ate with the man who would have Him murdered. Jesus said He wasn't here for those who already had a pew reserved.... He was here for those who would listen and learn.
Do you get up and leave a church service before it's done? Do you slip out during the alter call? The alter call is the reason for sitting through all the other stuff. The alter call is the reason we go to church in the first place..... it's for Salvation.
Let's not get into kissing rings or how many times the preacher has to plead to get one person up out of their pews in a dead church...... Let's not get into how some churches are just no good. Let's not get into how showing respect to a preacher, priest, or rabbi who is only in it for the adoration, money, and free room and board will pay for it when they get to Judgement. Let's not count the number of times the incense swings..... or comment on how wonderful that off key guitar player kept up with the words on the overhead projector.
I'm an old woman.... I'm half blind.... my hair is white... and my body is scarred by cancer. I've already answered the alter call. That's still no excuse for me to get up and leave during the singing of the last Hymn.... before the alter call. I'm an old woman.... I don't have to get dressed for success anymore.
I have time to study other religions. I'm stable in my faith. This space is available.
I don't want to convert anyone to Islam.
I only want to understand what's going on. I've been told Muslims are an enemy. I want to know why.
Old women are smart enough to know we don't have all the answers.
