Quran 33:9. O you who believe! Remember God’s blessings upon you, when forces came against you, and We sent against them a wind, and forces you did not see. God is Observant of what you do.
10. When they came upon you, from above you, and from beneath you; and the eyes became dazed, and the hearts reached the throats, and you harbored doubts about God.
11. There and then the believers were tested, and were shaken most severely.
12. When the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is sickness said, “God and His Messenger promised us nothing but illusion.”
13. And when a group of them said, “O people of Yathrib, you cannot make a stand, so retreat.” And a faction of them asked the Prophet to excuse them, saying, “Our homes are exposed,” although they were not exposed. They only wanted to flee.
14. Had it been invaded from its sides, and they were asked to dissent, they would have done so with little hesitation.
15. Although they had made a pledge to God, in the past, that they will not turn their backs. A pledge to God is a responsibility.
16. Say, “Flight will not benefit you, if you flee from death or killing, even then you will be given only brief enjoyment.”
17. Say, “Who is it who will shield you from God, if He intends adversity for you, or intends mercy for you?” Besides God, they will find for themselves neither friend nor helper.
18. God already knows the hinderers among you, and those who say to their brethren, “Come and join us.” Rarely do they mobilize for battle.
19. Being stingy towards you. And when fear approaches, you see them staring at you—their eyes rolling—like someone fainting at death. Then, when panic is over, they whip you with sharp tongues. They resent you any good. These have never believed, so God has nullified their works; a matter easy for God.
20. They assumed that the confederates had not withdrawn. But were the confederates to advance, they would wish they were in the desert with the Bedouins, inquiring about your news. And if they were among you, they would have done little fighting.
Here's the commentary. The events narrated in this section and a part of the following relate to the siege of Madßnah by the combined forces of the Quraish and their allies — viz., the Gha∆fån, the ‘Ashja‘ and Murrah, the Fazårah, the Sulaim and the Banß Sa‘d and Asad, aided by the Jewish tribe of the Banß Na˙ßr and the Banß Qurai˚ah, the latter of whom had made a treaty of alliance with the Muslims — the entire forces numbering from ten to twenty thousand according to different versions, while the Muslims were only about thirteen or fourteen hundred. The Prophet decided to remain within the town and a ditch was dug as a protective measure against the onrush of the powerful force. The battle continued for several days, the enemy eventually taking to flight on a stormy night without being able to inflict any loss upon the Muslims.
The reference is to the great hurricane which caused the enemy to flee. Muir says: “Wearied and damped in spirit, the night set in upon them cold and tempestuous. Wind and rain beat mercilessly on the unprotected camp. The storm rose to a hurricane. Fires were extinguished, tents blown down, cooking-vessels and other equipage overthrown”.
The hosts which could not be seen were the angelic hosts which disheartened the enemy. The storm alone would not have made an army of 10,000 to flee in such disorder, were it not that they had already been disheartened by the futility of their attacks upon the besieged Muslims.
The Gha∆fån pitched on the east side of the town, on the higher part of the valley, and the Quraish on the west side, on the lower part of the valley.
Becoming dull of the eyes and the rising of the hearts to the throats indicates the Muslim fear, which was only natural when such a large army was advancing against a mere handful of men. The diverse thoughts signify the fears of the weak-hearted and the hypocrites that Allåh’s promise would not prove true and that the enemy would destroy them.
That the prophecies of the Holy Qur’ån regarding the ultimate triumph of Islåm and the victory of the Muslims were not vague utterances, but clear and emphatic assertions, is shown by what the hypocrites are related to have said. There was an unmistakable promise of victory, but the circumstances were decidedly against the fulfilment of that promise, and hence the weak-hearted said that the promise of victory was given only to deceive them. It should be noted that the weak-hearted, who did not believe in the ultimate triumph of Islåm, are here classed with the hypocrites.
Yathrib was the name by which Madßnah was known before the Prophet’s flight to that city. On the Prophet’s flight there, it received the name of Madßnat al-Nabß or the City of the Prophet, or simply Madßnah.
That is, go back to idolatry to save your lives, or beat a retreat and return to your houses.
These verses describe the condition of the hypocrites, who advanced excuses for not fighting against the opponents of the Muslims. If an enemy had entered into the city from another side and invited them to join hands with him to fight against the Muslims, they would have been ready to fight. The concluding words show that they would have even left Madßnah to attack the Muslims and would not then have cared for the protection of their houses.
This morning.... I am reading about a hurricane that wiped out an enemy's plan to take out the Muslim Nation. When God gets involved... no human can fight. It's not in this story.... it's in the Bible.... but do you remember when all of the refugees were in the water but on dry ground walking out of Egypt.... water piled on both sides... on foot..... laden with all the personal belongings they could carry..... and a well armed army in chariots or on horseback.... was closing in behind them.... God sent a tsunami. In this story... God sent a hurricane. Wind whipped rain feels like bullets.... and makes it hard to fight. Flooding makes it hard to maneuver.
Now there were some who were afraid of going to war. I remember those guys.... from the Vietnam conflict.... oh they were all bluster and bull.... until their number came up in the draft.... and then they weren't about to close the border to Canada.... they ran past that border so quick their draft card couldn't catch up with them.... hypocrites.
Those of us who are reading all this today.... we're choosing which side of the army we will be on. Are we cowards or are we strong in the Lord and do as we are told? Are we all bark and no bite?
Hypocrites are all bark and no bite. When the lines are being drawn they are all "we'll show you". When the armies start to form on the flanks.... they start to step back..... moving out of the way of the front lines..... and then they say "oh I left the tap running and have to go home" or "oh I hear my wife calling something must be wrong I have to go home" or " I have bone spurs.... I can't fight... but I'll be President if you want... just let me go home".
God does natural disasters instead of crafting a weapon. God is heating up the volcanos as we speak. Earthquakes are rumbling everywhere. God doesn't need an army.... humans need to be fighters to prove their faith.... but God doesn't need humans.
God has no use for loud mouth hypocrites.
