Quran 8:20. O you who believe! Obey God and His Messenger, and do not turn away from him when you hear.
21. And be not like those who say, “We hear,” when they do not hear.
22. The worst of animals to God are the deaf and dumb—those who do not reason.
23. Had God recognized any good in them, He would have made them hear; and had He made them hear, they would have turned away defiantly.
24. O you who believe! Respond to God and to the Messenger when He calls you to what will revive you. And know that God stands between a man and his heart, and that to Him you will be gathered.
25. And beware of discord which does not afflict the wrongdoers among you exclusively; and know that God is severe in retribution.
26. And remember when you were few, oppressed in the land, fearing that people may capture you; but He sheltered you, and supported you with His victory, and provided you with good things—so that you may be thankful.
27. O you who believe! Do not betray God and the Messenger, nor betray your trusts, while you know.
28. And know that your possessions and your children are a test, and that God possesses an immense reward.

Here's the commentary.

Dåbbah means literally anything that walks (or creeps or crawls) upon the earth; hence any animal, or a beast, or any living thing. Note that the deaf and the dumb signify those who are spiritually deaf and dumb — those who do not understand.
Faith or submission to Allåh is life, and disbelief is death. By the expression that which gives you life some understand the Qur’ån, others take it to mean jihåd, or exertion in the cause of truth. Evidently it is faith.
By heart is meant the desires of the heart. The Divine intervention is the cutting off of those desires. The faithful are enjoined to be quick in responding to the call of the Prophet, and not to indulge in worldly desires, for these may soon be cut off. Or, the meaning is that they must respond to the call of the Prophet lest, having deprived themselves of one occasion of doing good, the heart should be hardened, and, as a punishment for the first rejection, Allåh may so turn it that it may not turn to good at all.
There was a time when the Muslims were so weak that they could be carried off by force. Such was their condition at Makkah. In Madßnah they were undoubtedly securer, and the enemy had to collect a force to crush them. Or, the help referred to here is the Divine help which the Muslims received in the battle of Badr.

I am horrible at lying. I am also horrible at theft. I can't get away with either. I'm the one who would always be left, holding the bag of stolen goods, with a stupid expression on my face while the others got away scot free. That's what the Muslims were like before that big battle of Badr. They were always outnumbered and alone.... but then God intervened and they were no longer the guy with the stupid expression on his face. They were united by Divine Intervention. God liked what they were doing. That bag they were holding wasn't stolen, it was given to them.

I was horrible at interviews. I am a talented bookkeeper. I've pulled a couple of companies out of the fire. I've saved government contracts and figured out where millions of dollars of inventory were hidden by bad accounting. But I couldn't pass an interview to nail the best jobs because I have a problem being interviewed. In my case, my experience and my references were my interview. I won a lot of good jobs because I worked for the right people who said the right things about me in writing. They backed me up. Just like God had the backs of the Muslims at the Battle of Badr.

Don't get all hung up on the numbers here on earth. You will wind up working for someone your whole life, either boss or client, and then you will still wind up living on your references rather than your own word. You'll talk about who you use to be that led you to this point, and you'll wonder why you worked so hard to get where you are. Humans cannot help you out, really. They get busy with their own life. They don't know your heart and where you are ultimately heading.

The reason I was so bad at lying.... I had no practice. I knew I was bad at it so I avoided it. Same with theft.... I couldn't get away with it. It only brought me grief, so why go through the motions. I'm lucky.... God made me horrible at being horrible! That's my security blanket! That's why I'm so happy now.... and not a homeless addict.... God made me horrible at being horrible.

You want to be a success..... These verses say.... let God run your life. He knows you are going to turn up on the right side of the argument.... He knows you have already aced the interview... He's ready to give you a reference.

A bunch of unarmed old men and inexperienced young boys took on a thousand well armed, experienced, blood thirsty troops and won!

The reason..... They had God on their side.

Faith in God....Having God as one of your references... Is the way to success.
