Quran 9:25. God has given you victory in numerous regions; but on the day of Hunayn, your great number impressed you, but it availed you nothing; and the land, as spacious as it was, narrowed for you; and you turned your backs in retreat.
26. Then God sent down His serenity upon His Messenger, and upon the believers; and He sent down troops you did not see; and He punished those who disbelieved. Such is the recompense of the disbelievers.
27. Then, after that, God will relent towards whomever He wills. God is Forgiving and Merciful.
28. O you who believe! The polytheists are polluted, so let them not approach the Sacred Mosque after this year of theirs. And if you fear poverty, God will enrich you from His grace, if He wills. God is Aware and Wise.
29. Fight those who do not believe in God, nor in the Last Day, nor forbid what God and His Messenger have forbidden, nor abide by the religion of truth—from among those who received the Scripture—until they pay the due tax, willingly or unwillingly.
30. The Jews said, “Ezra is the son of God,” and the Christians said, “The Messiah is the son of God.” These are their statements, out of their mouths. They emulate the statements of those who blasphemed before. May God assail them! How deceived they are!
31. They have taken their rabbis and their priests as lords instead of God, as well as the Messiah son of Mary. Although they were commanded to worship none but The One God. There is no god except He. Glory be to Him; High above what they associate with Him.
32. They want to extinguish God’s light with their mouths, but God refuses except to complete His light, even though the disbelievers dislike it.
33. It is He who sent His Messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth, in order to make it prevail over all religions, even though the idolaters dislike it.
34. O you who believe! Many of the rabbis and priests consume people's wealth illicitly, and hinder from God’s path. Those who hoard gold and silver, and do not spend them in God’s cause, inform them of a painful punishment.
35. On the Day when they will be heated in the Fire of Hell, then their foreheads, and their sides, and their backs will be branded with them: “This is what you hoarded for yourselves; so taste what you used to hoard.”
36. The number of months, according to God, is twelve months—in the decree of God—since the Day He created the heavens and the earth, of which four are sacred. This is the correct religion. So do not wrong yourselves during them. And fight the polytheists collectively, as they fight you collectively, and know that God is with the righteous.
37. Postponement is an increase in disbelief—by which those who disbelieve are led astray. They allow it one year, and forbid it another year, in order to conform to the number made sacred by God, thus permitting what God has forbidden. The evil of their deeds seems good to them. God does not guide the disbelieving people.

Here's the commentary.

The battle of Ïunain, fought in the eighth year of the Hijrah in the valley of Ïunain, at about three miles from Makkah, differed from the other battles inasmuch as the Muslims here outnumbered the enemy, the tribes of Hawåzin and Thaqßf being about 4,000 strong, while the Muslims are said to have been as many as ten or even twelve thousand. The archers of the enemy were good marksmen, and had occupied strong positions in the mountain passes. The Muslim army, on the other hand, contained two thousand men of Makkah, some of them still adhering to idolatry. Unfortunately this was the advance party of the army, and, unable to face the archers, they retreated causing disorder to the whole army. The Prophet, however, led the assault, at first alone, in face of the archers, but was soon joined by others and a victory was obtained, as the next verse shows.
The reference may be to the prisoners of the Hawåzin, who numbered thousands, and who were all set free as an act of favour by the Holy Prophet, or to their ultimately coming over to Islåm.
The importance of Makkah as a commercial centre lay in the fact that the whole of Arabia repaired to it in the season of the pilgrimage, and there carried out important commercial transactions. The prohibition referred to in the first part of the verse could have been easily foreseen as affecting the commerce, and consequently the prosperity of Makkah, but worldly or business considerations never interfered with the carrying out of the moral reforms of Islåm.
That there was a sect among the Jews who raised Ezra to the dignity of godhead, or son of God, is shown by Muslim historians. Qas∆alånß says, in the Kitåb al-Nikåƒ, that there was a party of Jews who held this belief. Nor did the Jews deny this allegation. The Qur’ån, too, mentions it only here in connection with the Christian doctrine, never blaming the Jews directly in the many controversies with them in the earlier chapters, and this shows that the Jewish nation as a whole was not guilty of entertaining this belief.
We are here told that the Christian doctrine that Jesus Christ was the son of God was borrowed from earlier pagan people. Recent research has established the fact beyond all doubt. In fact, when St. Paul saw that the Jews would on no account accept Jesus Christ as a messenger of God, he introduced the pagan doctrine of sonship of God into the Christian religion, so that it might become more acceptible to the pagans.
The acquisition of wealth is not disallowed, but the hoarding of it so as not to spend it in the cause of truth and for the welfare of humanity is denounced.
The punishment of an evil is spoken of throughout the Holy Qur’ån as similar to the evil. Even in this world, a man feels a torment similar to the nature of the evil in which he indulges. Being branded with the hoarded wealth is thus a fit description of the chastisement of the hoarders.

The allusion here is to the Arab practice of postponing the pilgrimage to a month other than that in which it fell, for which see the next verse. Whether the object was intercalation, in order to make the solar and lunar year tally, or whether a continuous cessation of war for a fourth part of the year was too long, is a disputed point; but such postponement was undoubtedly a great hardship for a majority of the people.
Fighting was prohibited in the sacred months. Excepting this, the Muslims were told to fight with the idolaters as the idolaters fought with them, i.e. since all idolaters united in fighting with the Muslims, the latter, too, should unite in fighting with them.
I was talking about the Quran lessons with hubby yesterday. I told him I noticed one thing that I just have to mention. All through these nine chapters of the Quran. There is a lot of talk about the "losers". Recently, in the US history, there was a leader who didn't really understand Muslims. He took measures against them.... but then I noticed.... he started using a verse that keeps showing up in the Quran. He keeps calling people "Loser". I hear the guy isn't much on reading.... I wonder where he heard it?

Oh and the battle described in the commentary.... it seems a lot like something out of a movie... where one guy shows ultimate courage and leads his troops in harms way and wins!
This is religion bashing. They believe there are Jews who worship Ezra? They believe that Paul took advantage of the people by lying to them about Jesus.

So we need a refresher. Ezra was the guy who led the Jews back to Jerusalem after they had been held in Babylon. Ezra was a builder. He helped them put it all back together. He has his own book in the Bible.

Paul..... he's the guy who claims Jesus knocked him to the ground and blinded him in order to get his attention. Then he is said to have had a Divine conversion from killing Christians to leading them. Apparently the Muslims think he was a sham. Perhaps that's because some Christians claimed Mary to be a goddess. Mary was not a goddess. She was a normal young woman. God used her but she was not a goddess. She doesn't deserve having people bow down to her.

Because the church taught stuff that just wasn't true.... it tainted the Truth. Because the synagogue got all involved in Ezra, Ezra wasn't anyone special. He was a man used by God. He doesn't deserve having people bow down to him.

Yes.... I believe Jesus is the Son of God. Yep.... I believe that. I worship God! He's the guy. If it weren't for God, there would be no Jesus.

The church is the issue.... the church twisted the scripture to fit their financial goals. I've seen it over and over and over again.

This is religion bashing.
