Quran 9:67. The hypocrite men and hypocrite women are of one another. They advocate evil, and prohibit righteousness, and withhold their hands. They forgot God, so He forgot them. The hypocrites are the sinners.
68. God has promised the hypocrite men and hypocrite women, and the disbelievers, the Fire of Hell, abiding therein forever. It is their due. And God has cursed them. They will have a lasting punishment.
69. Like those before you. They were more powerful than you, and had more wealth and children. They enjoyed their share, and you enjoyed your share, as those before you enjoyed their share. And you indulged, as they indulged. It is they whose works will fail in this world and in the Hereafter. It is they who are the losers.
70. Have they not heard the stories of those before them? The people of Noah, and Aad, and Thamood; and the people of Abraham, and the inhabitants of Median, and the Overturned Cities? Their messengers came to them with the clear proofs. God never wronged them, but they used to wrong their own selves.
71. The believing men and believing women are friends of one another. They advocate virtue, forbid evil, perform the prayers, practice charity, and obey God and His Messenger. These—God will have mercy on them. God is Noble and Wise.
72. God promises the believers, men and women, gardens beneath which rivers flow, abiding therein forever, and fine homes in the Gardens of Eden. But approval from God is even greater. That is the supreme achievement.
73. O Prophet! Strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be stern with them. Their abode is Hell—what a miserable destination!
74. They swear by God that they said nothing; but they did utter the word of blasphemy, and they renounced faith after their submission. And they plotted what they could not attain. They were resentful only because God and His Messenger have enriched them out of His grace. If they repent, it would be best for them; but if they turn away, God will afflict them with a painful punishment—in this life and in the Hereafter—and they will have on earth no protector and no savior.
75. Among them are those who promised God: “If He gives us of His bounty, we will donate and be among the upright.
76. But when He has given them of His bounty, they became stingy with it, and turned away in aversion.
77. So He penalized them with hypocrisy in their hearts, until the Day they face Him—because they broke their promise to God, and because they used to lie.
78. Do they not know that God knows their secrets and their conspiracies? And that God is the Knower of the unseen?
79. Those who criticize the believers who give charity voluntarily, and ridicule those who find nothing to give except their own efforts—God ridicules them. They will have a painful punishment.
80. Whether you ask forgiveness for them, or do not ask forgiveness for them—even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, God will not forgive them. That is because they disbelieved in God and His Messenger. God does not guide the immoral people.

Commentary....

The Prophet is commanded here to carry on a jihåd against disbelievers as well as hypocrites. Hence the only significance that can be attached to these words is that he must continue to preach forcibly both to the disbelievers and the hypocrites.
They were in secret alliance with the enemies of Islåm and did their best to put an end to the life of the Prophet and bring about the extirpation of Islåm.
The advent of the Muslims in Madßnah had enriched its inhabitants. Was it not, then, a matter for wonder that those men who had gained by Islåm should turn against their very benefactors?

When subscriptions were raised for the expedition to Tab∂k, the wealthier members of the Muslim community gave large donations, while the poorer ones, the labourers, also paid their mite out of their hard earnings. The hypocrites taunted both, the former as making a show of their wealth, the latter as bringing in their small subscriptions only to be counted among the subscribers

When ‘Abd Allåh ibn Ubayy died, the Holy Prophet was asked to conduct the burial service. The Holy Prophet got up, but ‘Umar took hold of his garment and objected on the ground that ‘Abd Allåh was a hypocrite, and referred to his hostile attitude throughout his life. The Holy Prophet replied that Allåh had given him a choice (referring to the words of this verse: Ask forgiveness for them or ask not forgiveness for them), and that he would ask forgiveness for him for over seventy times, if only by his doing so, forgiveness could be extended to the dead man. Then he offered prayers for him.
Verse 84 is said to have been revealed then to stop the offering of prayers for those who were known to be hypocrites. The incident shows how kind and forgiving the Holy Prophet was to his severest enemies.Abd Allåh ibn Ubayy was the man who had led the hypocrite movement against him the whole of his life, and thus was not only one of his worst enemies, but at the same time a most dangerous one, because he was aware of all the movements of the Muslims and deceived them at the most critical moments. Yet the Holy Prophet forgave him entirely.

What a miserable creature the dead guy must have been. Now think.... who's the biggest hypocrite you know.... well that guy was even worse!

Remember when the rich guy went to see Jesus? Remember when he asked Jesus if he could join the disciples? Jesus told him it would be easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for the rich man to become a real disciple. [Matthew 19:24]

That's what is going on here. The hypocrites were all giving to be seen. When the believers gave.... the hypocrites made some kind of disparaging comment about the gift. Either it was too big or too small. It was not enough based on the amount the giver earned or it was useless because the giver was too poor to offer more.
Hypocrites always know the meaning of the verse.... but think it doesn't apply to them.

Muhammed wanted to pray for the guy..... the same guy that was leader of the hypocrites. This guy inspired the preachers to pound the pulpit and make demands of God. The hypocrites turned to this guy for their daily supply of what to hate for the day.... and Muhammed prayed for him.

Pray for the hypocrites.
