I think they need to raise taxes on gas (even more than proposed) because that's the only way you're going to get people to actually conserve. What would be even better would be tax-free energy up to a certain point and then massive taxes. That way, wasters get taxed heavily which would encourage them to conserve. However, implementing that would be incredibly difficult because it would have to encompass all forms of energy that people purchase (i.e. gas, propane, electricity, etc.) and would have to have some way of tracking usage.

BTW, what I am talking about has nothing to do with raising funds for project X. I agree, decrease spending to do that.

These tax people either dont realise or dont give a damn, that every extra dollar we spend on gas is a dollar less we have to put into the economy. It isnt like I go around spilling it out of the tank. Its needed to get to work, Its needed to go to the doctor, its needed to get to the grocery store. its needed to go shopping.

Certainly some of this can be cut back, and most of us have I believe, but some things cannot be cut back.
Gasoline prices and heating oil prices are hitting crisis level on my fixed income. Those little extra things that help keep the economy moving are suffering because there isnt anything left.

I totally disagree.

1. It is not the function of government to influence society be discouraging legal activities and spending habits.

2. Washington, namely congress would get addicted to the increased revenue like crack. When conservation began and the revenue they were rolling in decrease they would tax the living shiat out of something else to make up for it.

3. If we conserve it will not create a glut of fuel and cause prices to drop. China and the nations that are quickly industrializing would gobble up every drop we do not use. If there was by chance a surplus of fuel OPEC would simply cut back production to keep demand and prices high.

4. It is the job of the market to influence personal spending habits. Fuel prices will eventually rise to the point it does influence consumption, just like it is supposed to happen.

5. It would impact the low end of the socio-economic strata much harder than the middle and the top increasing the gap between the haves and the have nots.

....but folks can make a difference just by doing little thing like making the grocery store run on the way home from work instead of making two seperate trips. Little things add up over the course of a year.

I do this. I do all my shopping on the way to or from work.

Why should I, somebody who has practiced fuel conservation, be taxed because other people use a lot of fuel.

Why does the government care in the first place?

So, you and ylexot are saying that gas prices should go up. Pete and Imnomensa are right, at that point that's money not going into the economy.

Sooner or later, taxes are going to go up. It's just a matter of when the DemocRATs take control Congress and The White House.

Please reread my post. I said nothing about raising gas prices or taxes. That's something I oppose. I was just talking about conservation.

Why should all be taxed? I read somewhere where the roads needs consistent upkeep and work, toll the road instead of tax...

The government should reset and regulate gas prices first.

The economy is tanking and they want to impose more then debate "why" a recession is looming?

Another issue is ensuring this "tax" will be used for road construction/repair - that is a luagh as the taxes collected for this and that are shown where they go...

You didn't. I stated in reply to your post that I do the most I can to save energy.

Someone else stated earlier that the gov't should raise taxes to, basically to force change.

:bs: Sell your car and buy a motorcycle.
For what, $5. :killingme

My car is a worthless piece of schiat.

I work close to home, finally. I shop close to home on my way home from work.

My computer is energy efficent. I usually watch TV off the raw cable line instead of the Digital Cable (which is powered off 90% of the time). I take all my notes on my tablet PC, thus saving paper and saving trees. My $20 laser printer is energy efficent, and I have yet to have to change toner in it. Flat panel monitor uses far less power than a CRT, saving energy. Do you want me to go on down the list some more?

It's simple everyday stuff people can do to save energy and save money for themselves in the long run.

I DON'T want a Motorcycle. That just means I have to get another license and go through more hassle and aggravation with the MVA and learn how to ride the Motorcycle and so on and so fourth.

If I ever get the money, my next car's a Prius. :yay:

If you drive so little, then the tax would barely affect you
