I have never uderstood opposition to 'starwars'. Think about it; are there very many better things, for all mankind, than to have the ability to make nuclear missiles obsolete?

I remember at the time, two major objections that the Russians had.

One is that it violates the ABM treaty - and still does. The way we're getting around that is that we signed that treaty with the Soviet Union - an entity that no longer exists. Yeah, I still think it's a lame excuse.

The other is one of perspective. The Russians at the height of the Cold War were beyond convinced that we wanted to wipe them out with nuclear weapons. My friends at Voice of America said that *every* Russian they met asked them that question "why do you want war with us?". A weapon that made their missiles useless was one step from a first strike scenario, and thus was a direct threat to them.

I'm kind of unimpressed by star wars technology, because from what I've seen, it's alarmingly easy to defeat.
