Real Question...

Time for a nap
My friend had a pad of paper on her desk at work today.

When I looked closer, the pad of paper was divided into two columns: one for "Pros" and one for "Cons." She said she used the paper when she was making major decisions in her personal life (don't ask me why she had it at work).

Has anyone ever used anything like this? I'm not one for writing down Pros and Cons when making a decision...:justmakesdecisionsonthefly:

It actually has a name, and is useful in sales, as well as decision making..

it's the "Ben Franklin 'T'"....

You list all the pros on one side, all the cons.. add up both coumns, and whichever column is greater wins.. PRO the answer is yes.. and CON the answer is no..

VERY easy for a salesman to manipulate the pros and cons so it comes out to what he wants you to do.. VERY effective tool.

All the time. With everything. I'm a big list-maker anyway and pro/con lists just put everything into perspective for me. We're going to OBX for a week this summer and I have pages of pros/cons about various rental houses we're looking at.

I actually made a list of the qualities my dream guy would have and wouldn't have. That's how I recognized Larry as "the one" when I found him.

Every good major decision I've made comes from this method.

Bad ones come from not using it.

It MAKES you be rational. It forces you to confront cons objectively; you can't just ignore them out of your mind.

It forces you to be objective with pro's; they can't just be fantasies in your mind if they are right there in your face.

Now I've made decisions on the fly that turned out good or even great but that is called:

LUCK

...and she graded out at 85%. Then the debate became 'is 85% enough?'.

In a perfect world, no.

Do I live in a perfect world? No.

Was my list perfect, for all time? No.

85% was a pretty damn good number and very realistic.

Over time, she's moved closer to perfect because the list was made by a 33 year old and one thing I left out of the list was whether or not I would always be 33.

I don't want to hear no crybabaies: It takes time to make a list. It takes time to prove it out. It takes time to review it again and again. It takes time to let it sit and then come back to it.

Wah.

At the time it may seem like time.

Quickly make a bad decision.

Now you know what time is.

I'm actually going to use something along the same lines, but far more complex to help me decide on a new car. It's called an analysis of alternatives. Basically, you determine all the traits that are important to you and give them weighting factors that reflect how important they are. Then you give each alternative scores for each trait that reflects how well they meet your criteria. Multiply them by the weighting factors and total them up. Highest score wins. It's a good method for multiple options. The pro/con method is pretty much yes/no type decisions.
