Red Chow found...not a good story!

Silence!!! I Kill You!!!
While working on the fences yesterday, my husband walked by the horse trailer and was growled and barked at. He saw a dog underneath it and left it alone. I went to check the chickens last night and I was barked at when I approached the coop...the dog was now under there and I could see it was some sort of Chow. I left it alone and called animal control...no response. Later on I went to ride a horse and was in the barn when I saw the red chow staggering slowly toward the barn...I yelled and it walk/staggered up to our house and under our truck. Thinking it had rabies or something because of the way it was acting, I ran to the back of our house and told my husband...while talking to him the dog went under the porch I was standing on, and I got the first real look at him...the was a ten inch oval patch over his back and ribs that was open to the muscle...I knew that the dog was hurt bad. The dog went around the house and now moved into our front porch, it was like he/she was looking for it's family, but anytime we approached it was VERY aggressive. From our front window we could now clearly see that the dogs hind right leg was nearly off, and it had another chunk of skin off its him. The neck fur was coated in dried blood, and it looks like it was turning brown / green in areas. We called the Sheriff, they transfered us to an animal control agent. The agent told us we could put the dog down if it was as injured as we said. We did the humane thing. Once the dog was out of its misery, we got a good look at everything, and we were disgusted. It almost looks at this animal was drug on the ground becuase of the way the right side is. I guess it is possible it was hit by a car, but the ribs didn't seem to be broken. If this is a case of abuse, I am appalled and saddened, no animal deserves this. I read the other post about owner drop-offs at the shelter, that would have been a far better ending for this poor dog.

Wow, how awful for you. That poor dog. It sounds like it may have been hit by a car but it's also possible that it had been abused. You didn't mention a collar so I'm assuming it had no I.D.. Did animal control offer to come by and scan it for a micro chip? It's possible it was someone's pet and if so, they would probably like to know what became of the poor thing. I know if it were my dog, I'd like to know what happened. Did they offer to come out at all?

:huggy: It really was a bad deal. The dog was not wearing a collar. I thought it may have been our neighbors dog, so I went and talked to them, but they had never had or knew of a red chow. I would have to guess it was a pet, either abandoned or a run-away, or even possibly someone intentionally did this to it. The animal control left the whole situation up to us, including disposal. They called again this morning to make sure we were able to take care of everything, so no, they didn't offer to scan for a chip. I feel horrible, and I wish I could let the owner know, but I didn't see anything for a missing chow in the lost and found area. And how do you tell someone that their dog was in this bad of a condition? It seems people abandon dogs and cats by us all the time. Usually the animal control comes within a couple of days to get the dogs, and we try to find homes for the cats (unless they are wild and mean). it really sucks to have a strange dog that is in bad shape or starving curl up on your porch and stay their until AC comes and gets them...you know the outlook isn't good.

What an awful story about the chow...its a shame, poor dog. Who knows, it could've been used as a bait dog in a dog fighting ring, hit by a car, etc. I'm sure it was a hard thing to do, at least the animal isn't suffering anymore. Sorry you had to go through that...

I'm sure his death at your hands was a far better end than being chased down and noosed, drug across the ground, forced into a truck by his neck, and spending his final moments adding terror to the suffering he was already dealing with. Least i would suspect that's how it would go. Their lack of interest is still kind of disturbing. Not concerned about a possible abuse case, or even rabies?

Interesting, isn't it? Nobody was concerned about the two dead raccoons we had a few weeks ago. Not Animal Control..not the Sheriff...nobody. "only bit your dogs mam..you need to dispose of the raccoons."

This is really not good form. I would not trust Joe Average Tard to know how to quickly and humanely end a suffering animals life.

Remember the dog abuse case (in my neighborhood) that I told you about? I reported two separate incidents, not sure if they were ever looked into. The dog is still with its owners and I haven't witnessed any other incidents since.

I totally agree, a snare on that dogs neck would have been excruciatingly painfull for it. At least this way his misery was ended in a matter of seconds. I too was surprised at the willingness of animal control to let Joe Citizen take care of this matter, with the only follow up being a check to make sure we disposed of it.
