I frankly cannot recall a time in my life when this has been more true, and this has been a dictum of my news perusal most of my adult life.

I gotta think that natural disasters are a welcome boon to media crafters hoping to deflect the bad news out of Washington. It's pretty sad when a hurricane that didn't approach the devastation visited on us by an Ian dominated the news for a week.

Was just reminded of this one this morning. They had no warning whatever. One extreme to the other.

The Galveston hurricane of 1900, a Category 4 storm, was the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history, bringing a 15-foot storm surge and winds of more than 135 mph. The hurricane killed between 6,000 and 12,000 and brought damages totaling about $881 million in 2017 dollars.
