Rescue or Help Needed

We are moving very soon and we cannot take any of our pets with us. We have been able to find new homes for one of the dogs and our cat but have had no luck finding a place for our older dog. She is 13 years old or so and is starting to show her age. She is pretty much lame in one leg but otherwise healthy. She is happy all of the time and is very pleasant to be around. She has been around children and other dogs and cats her whole life and has no issues. We adopted her after she was rescued from a dumpster where she had been abandoned and is truly a sweetheart. It is heartbreaking to have to leave her after all this time but we have no choice.

We have talked to some of the rescues and they have nothing to offer other than the animal shelter and we know what the result will be there because of her age. We have left messages with the SMAWL but they don't return phone calls I guess. I want nothing more than for her to be able to live out her life in a loving home. Any love that you offer her will be returned with interest.

Please PM me if you have any ideas.

This is so sad. Did you try the classifieds on somd.com? Did you contact ARF in Lexington Park? have you put him/her on facebook with a picture? Good luck and I pray you are able to find a good home.

This just makes me sick to my stomach that this poor poor dog will have to be placed with strangers at such an advanced age. I don't care what the circumstances I could never do it.

I couldn't either Kdenise. Maybe they're being deployed or something. I got my Golden because of a man who was deployed. But she was only 6 months old.

It just doesn't seem fair. My mother in law, she's a saint, the only dogs she ever adopts are ones that are older that she knows no one else will take. Her last dog she adopted was a 9 year old Great Pyramese and it just passed away in November. Same with the cats she rescued, she lost 2 cats and one dog last year. I don't blame her for not wanting to do it anymore, but, I wish more people were like her.

One of the MAJOR reasons many "rescues" won't adopt to active duty military...way too many pets being dumped because they "can't take them".

Pisses me off! Don't care what the service or the situation. If you are military, going to be moved around a to, get a goldfish, not a loving pet that bonds with people!
Better to put her down that to dump her after 13 years of living as a "family" member!

What kind of dog? I have friends that are trying to adopt an older dog (Lab), but could possibly be interested in yours. Thanks!

I am so sorry. I am sure you are heartbroken. We lost both our 13 year old dogs last year. I would take your furry friend if I could, but we have decided no more dogs, plus, one of my cats is deaf and terrorized our dogs for 10 years. I know you wouldn't be looking for a home, if there was anything else you could do. Good luck. I hope it works out. :huggy:

What if you lost your job and had to downsize to an apartment that didn't allow pets?

There are a million circumstances where someone would have to give up their pet and it's not for us to judge and make mean comments without knowing the situation. I always applaud someone who makes an effort to rehome their pet instead of dumping them at a shelter or out in the woods. If the cat or dog goes to a good home they will adapt just fine and be happy.

I wasn't judging, I said I couldn't do it, I'd live with family before I could do that. I didn't say a bad word to the OP.

That's BS! I know many military including myself who paid for airline tickets and quaratine for their dog to fly overseas. Sometimes some duty may come up that is isolated or the older dog may have to stay 6 months in a cage in quarantine. Now what would be more humane, undergoing a long overseas flight followed by living in a cage for 6 months or finding a comfortable loving home? I know if I had a 13 year old dog I don't think I would put them through that.
But to the rescues that discriminate against our military, you go ahead and stick with locals who also keep moving and deciding they don't have "time" for their dogs anymore. Or the many other excuses that they come up with.

Just saying what the policies of some "rescues" are in this area.
Not to mention there is 1 or 2 groups who just do rehoming or temp. foster care for active duty pets.
This guy CANT take his 3 pets..you obviously could and could afford it and felt you pet could endure 6 months living in a cage at a facility in a strange place (Hawaii comes to mind).

I did my time and waited till I retired to get pets! it is all about stability.

And about the other comment about losing a job etc; If you love your pet, you will go to any length to find a place where both of you can live! But it is all too easy to toss the pet aside..go look at the Free to Good Home ads and tell me you really believe all those kids are suddenly "allergic"!!!!
That is BS!

You are still missing the point, and, also, the fact that ancient is sad. Life is unpredictable, and sometimes out of our control to fix, no matter how much we plan for the future, or how we want things to be. Let me know where your Utopia is located, and I will move there to be your neighbor, on purpose.

He is Navy, active duty. He KNOWS the deal...he gets transferred every 4-6 years. He volunteered for the Navy and now has to get rid of a 13 year old dog because he is getting transferred.

Sorry for the dog, but not for him as he KNOWS the rules and regs and now wants the civilian community to bail him out and take his pets, despite the fact he volunteered for the Navy and took in pets he knew could not go everywhere with him!
