I went to the mall in Dover last night to return something to a store. The item was untouched, still had tags, in the original bag, AND I had the receipt. BF purchased the item with his debit card. The clerk asked me if I had that debit card, and I said, "No, it's my boyfriend's card." So, she asked if I wanted a gift card. I said no. She told me I either had to have that original debit card, or get a gift card. It wasn't a huge deal, because BF was in the mall (at the other end), so I just went and brought him back to the store with me, and she credited the debit card.
I can understand having to get the refund on a gift card if the item had only a gift receipt, but why couldn't they just give me cash? I used to work retail, and it was no big deal to just give cash back. It's not like it was a credit card, either. It was a debit card.
